HEEELLLP! Frustrated at Toddler Continued Vomiting.

For about the past two weeks my 2yr old has been throwing up on and off. He first began with a cold in Vegas while on vacation then turned to a stomach virus I thought. Came home, he started to slowly increase his eating. One day I gave him spaghetti, he was fine. Two days later, I gave him again but he threw it up. The following week he got really bad, definitely a stomach virus again (assume he didn't kick it the first time, my mom got and so did I) That was Tuesday. It's now Sunday and threw up again taters and chicken nuggets. I'm so frustrated. He's not eating his favorite foods. I can't say it's a specific food or time. Not sure if he's eating too much/less or gets grossed out which he then self induces vomiting. Picky eater? It's not the first time he throws up something he didn't like but not his favorites. Could it be a stomach problem or is he going through a faze? Any similar experiences?

What can I do next?

Hey Lisa,

My two year old is going through the same thing. I took him to the doctor and it's probably his molers coming in. Teething causes them to have a post nasal drip and that causes the vomiting. Give it time.....it will past.

I am also from NY, what part are you from?

Take Care

His system could still be irritated and sauces of fried foods are too strong to digest. Go back to soda crackers, mashed potatoes, gelatins, dry cereal (not sweet ones) and 7-up for a couple of days. That should do it. Good luck.

Hi L., He could have too much acid in his stomach. I have heard of babies having acid reflux. It won't hurt to check it out, plus there could be something else wrong. Take him to a specialist to find out. Good luck. M. H.

L.,

Take your child to the Dr.
There could be multiple reason this is happening .The Dr. can usually rule it out quicker than everyone guessing while the child still suffering. It is always better safe than sorry when it comes to parenting. Just remember not to be emotional in your decision making, it slows down progress, just decide and do it based on the facts of the matter and know the child is depending on mommy for relief.

Take care and good luck,

Dear L. G,

I don't want to scare you but this cannot be a phase, please go to pediatrics.com whenever your in doubt. Chicken nuggets and taters might have too much fat for a 2 yr old.

It could be many, many things but only your pediatrician will know for sure. I think your little one may be sensitive to greasy foods, it is not unusual in toddlers. The citric acid in the spaghetti may be alittle to acidic for him, and thus could cause the vomiting also, I would say, stop guessing and go at least you will be ruling out possibilities for other things that may be of substantial concern and detriment if not treated. I send you well wishes and blessings for you and your little one.

This happened to my son, though he was several years older. The doctor finally figured out that it was his diet. Since he was such a picky eater, his body had a hard time completely kicking the virus the rest of the family was able to flush out of our bodies. He should NOT be eating foods like chicken nuggets and taters until his stomach is fully healed. Ask your doctor to give you a list of suggestions of healthy, lean foods he can eat to build back his strength. I know picky eaters are rough-- but if he gets hungry enough and chicken nuggets aren't an option put in front of him, he will eventually resort to eating things like a lean piece of rolled up deli meat, some whole wheat bread, and some fruits and veggies. In the meantime, ask your pediatrician if you should give him Pediasure in order for him to get some nutrition while you fight to get some healthy FOODS into him.

if you keep feeding him those strong foods, he'll keep throwing up. Remember BRAT and feed him these foods for a couple days...bland bland bland
Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast.

Maybe try to give him just soups and easy to digest food, and don't make a big deal everytime he throws up, because he knows you are very worry about it, and he probably loves to see you like that.
I have a 6,5 and 2 years old.
Show him that you don't mind and don't talk about it in front of him
I hope it works

Hi. Let me start off by saying that my daughter has a history of reflux issues since she was born. However, when she was about 2 1/2 we all got the stomach virus. My husband and I recovered in a few days. We thought she had recovered and she started eating regularly again. Then out of nowhere she would projectile vomit in the middle of eating. This started happening about every 36 hours. It was weird. Her pediatrician said she just had a sensitive stomach and to watch what we gave her to eat (she wasn't showing any other signs of being ill.) The vomiting about every other day continued. (And I don't mean spit up-- it was projectile with no warning.) This went on for 3 or 4 weeks and I was at my wits end. I knew there was something wrong. I made an appointment with her pediatric GI doctor and he diagnosed her with Gastritis. He said sometimes it can happen after the stomach virus. (She needed to be put on medicine to clear it up.)

Follow your gut. If you feel this is more that the stomach virus go to the doctor. You know your child best. Hope this helps.

sounds like he eats junk food. Anything friend or processed will upset the stomach. And he's only two? Have you discussed this with your pediatrician?

Hi L.,

Kids don't throw up for no reason. It could be one of many things. If his digestive system is off track and not producing bile to digest food then he could be vomiting regularly. This sometimes happens when meds are given (even antacids or over the counter cold meds can cause it). Sometimes it happens if too many processed foods or fast foods are eaten. Processed foods have chemicals in them that contraindicate just like pharmaceuticals do. You never know what symptom they will cause.

It could possibly be a virus. If it's that it will have to run it's course. If it's a bacteria, then it will have to be diagnosed. H Pylori is a common bacteria, and contagious, that rares it's ugly head when least expected. Doctors will prescribe an antibiotic but there are a lot of people that antibiotics don't help. You can google the list of natural remedies that will get rid of it and prevent it. Most are just food and you can try them just to see if they help.

I'm not a doctor but have been through this several times with friends. Most often it's the processed food thing...

M.

I would take him to your pediatrician. It is probably just a stomach virus, but it could be something more serious (both my daughter, 4, and myself have Celiac Disease and one of my symptoms was throwing up). If you or hur husband have a history of auto-immune diseases, it would not hurt to mention it to your doctor.

L., have you thought about taking the toddler to see if he/she is allergic to something? Perhaps some testing may be in order.

You need to go to the health food store and get something very natural, and not what ever the doctor is giving. sometimes that stuff can do more harm than good. Don't get me wrong I certainly believe in doctors, it's just that some times our bodies reject the prescribed stuff and needs something natural.

take him to the doctor to rule out swine flu. i know it is not as bad as we all thought it would be but once you can rule out it being a virus or flu you can decide what to do if he is throwing up food he does not like.
if it is not a virus write down everything he eats and how he reacts to it. he may be allergic, or have a sensitive stomach.
try to be as patient as possible though. i know that is always easier said than done.

Hi.. Last month THE EXACT same thing happened with my 3 year old.. he started throwing up...threw up a couple times was fine for like 12 to 18 hours (we thought it was over) and then it would start again..Went on for a week, we tried everything, no dairy, the brat diet, everything, nothing worked! Go to Walgreens or CVS and get a probiotic, it is over the counter, the adult and childrens versions are the same.. it is in powder form. Give it to him in the morning and the evening, drop it in a cup of Gatoraid, there is no taste so he wont know its there, but encourage him to finish it! By the 3rd dose the vomiting will be gone! My pediatrician highly recommends this and to continue it for 3 days and I promise I was sceptical to, BUT IT WORKED!! When you throw up or have excessive diarreha you lose the good bacteria in your belly, so it makes it hard for your body to fight off the bad bacteria, the probiotic replaces the good bacteria's benefits until you body can produce it for itself. And with him throwing up for so long, enough time isnt passing for his body to have time to do this naturally without a little help. Please research it but I promise this will help him!!

God Bless!

Let me know how it goes! =D

I'd take him to the Dr. We are going tomorrow. My 2.5 year old had the vomitting all day on Mothers Day but just hasn't been eating since. She seems weak and tired all the time. She also has loose stools though. She's not eating like herself either. I'd take your little one just to rule out anything!

Hi,

Is your child showing any other flu symptoms? The vomiting may be related to swallowing air when he chews and swallows. Does he complain of frequent stomachaches and or haedaches recently? Where are you located? I would be happy to help evaluate whhat is happenng.

Take Care,

B.

We had a stomach bug when my daughter was 2. It went through us all. But she held on t a little diarrha and some vomiting for a few weeks. In the end we were set to do a stool test but she cleared up in a few days. If it doesn't clear up soon, talk to your doctor about a test.
