Proud mother of five. Happily married. EXPECTING TWINS! Help I can't handle all of this. I have five grade school children. We live in a four bedroom house! My husband and I can barley afford the five that we have. Does anybody have any ideas to cope? Thanks:)

What can I do next?

I think the timing of this question and the post right before is pretty cool.

Hi L.!

Welcome if new.

I found out I was having twins when my oldest of 5 WAS 5.

Today, the twins turned 18. A proud day!

Take care of yourself during the pregnancy. Get organized NOW.

I have 4 boys, and 3 girls. The two older boys bunked together , and the two younger boys did as well. They CHOSE to bunk together even when time moved on, and we had more bedrooms. The girls ultimately shared as well, a bunk with a twin on the top, and a 'full' on the bottom.

Beyond that, I have no suggestions just now. Shop wisely. IF you have a freezer, try to stock it with meals! (ie, when doing lasagna, make a couple...partially cook and freeze one). Make soup! Freeze the extras.

If YOU have the will...there is a way.

best!

ETA:

Did I miss something? I am a bit surprised at many of the negative comments. I found myself in a similar situation. We could (and did) afford it, but it was a CRAZY shock just the same. My now ex DID (at my insistence) get a vasectomy. (I am sure he NEW wife is very grateful...lol).

I was not sure at ALL that I could manage...but manage we did!

Sometimes, when writing, people are guilty of a bit of 'hyperbole'...cut her a break!

Truly!

And, if she IS a troll...what have 'you' lost really? 2 minutes of your time?

Just taking a different view is all. I am sensitive TOWARD bigger families I suppose.

but to take it seriously for a second........
i am staunchly pro-choice, and that includes choices i dislike. but that doesn't mean i'm fond of people who make repeated moronic choices, and people like this are at the top of my bulls-eye.
so, adoption is the best idea i have for you to cope. and probably of more than the upcoming twins. adopt 'em all out until you're down to a number you can more than 'barley' afford. then get surgically sterilized. both of you. that's a taxpayer expense i'm happy to shoulder.

Since your other kids are older, I'd sit everyone down, write a list of everything that needs to happen around the house, etc. And have everyone pick jobs. Once upon a time, kids did things like cook every dinner by age 12. When I was 12, I cleaned the house every week. Get everyone involved! If you don't flylady, she may be of great help.

If you don't coupon, you may want to give it a try. It can take time, and isn't always worth it, but smart shopping is smart. I saved 100 at target today, and left with 40 in gift cards. Not bad, as it was all stuff we needed!

Lastly, remember, the first trimester hormones make you doubt everything. It will be fine, you will figure it out, just rest for now, and remember that the negative stuff is hormonal. It will pass, and by the second trimester you will be excited.

And it sounds like you have enough space. I know someone that had 7 siblings and they had a 3 bedroom , 1 toilet house. You just need bunkbeds, and earplugs.

First thing you do is have your husband get a vasectomy.

We can't help you... Consider placing the babies with a couple through an adoption agency, then take measures to prevent further pregnancies .

I'm having a tough time with your post.

You can barely afford the 5 children that you have? Seriously? Then what in the world are you doing having sex without protection?!

I wish you well. After you give birth to your twins, you may want to take some steps to prevent future pregnancies?

L.,

Welcome to mamapedia!! Since this is your first post and "out there" - I'm calling troll....if on the odd chance you're not a troll???

First thing I would do is take my husband to the doctor and get a vasectomy. Then stop having sex after you have the babies without protection - until you are 100% positive the vasectomy took and your tubes are tied...as in my book?? You shouldn't be having unprotected sex if you can't afford the kids you already have...

Then I would sit down and find out if we really can afford two more mouths - this will mean another car or a bigger car - like a Suburban or one of those huge passenger vans...

If the answer is no - and I am sure there are plenty on here that will slam me for this - but oh well - put them up for adoption. There are a TON of places that will help you find parents that can afford twins and WANT them...I'm not saying you do NOT want them...

Then after birth?? Get your tubes tied.

IN the mean time??

Figure out ways to save money and be able to afford the kids. Maybe your husband can find a better paying job?

Bunk beds for the older kids if you can't afford to buy a bigger home. However, if you really are in Chantilly - one of my good friends is moving and buying a home in Harper's Ferry, WV - bigger home, bigger lot, and only 30 minutes from Chantilly - for less than $350K....

You will need to find out if your insurance covers home care for the first few weeks you have the babies home.

Breast feed - it's free!! Yeah - the one thing in life that's free!! LOL!!

Join the MOM's group - there's one in Chantilly - that's Mom's of Multiples - they are a great support group for mom's with twins, triplets and quads.

Then go to the library and borrow books from Dave Ramsey or Suze Orman and figure out your finances.

Can you do this? Yes. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Good luck!!

Congratulations! I have several friends with 7-9 kids, and they are not wealthy financially, but rich in all that matters. I know you'll make it work--as with many things that are hard in life, you do what you have to do. Making friends with other people who have large families might help--they may have suggestions and solutions that others might not think of.

As far as the bedrooms, one of my friends with many children just puts them 3-4 to a bedroom. You may want to have one of the four rooms be where the dressers are, and the bedrooms just be where the beds are. They can lay out their clothes the night before and get dressed in their own rooms, but dressers can take up a lot of space. If you have two bunk beds (or a twin-over full bed even) in both "bedrooms", and keep the clothes in a separate room, you'll be amazed at how those three "kid" bedrooms can work! When the twins are little, you can keep them both in the same crib.

Mothers of Multiples is a group that may help. They have chapters all over the country. The Fairfax County website is www.fcmom.org; the Loudon County one is www.lfmomc.net. Any of the moms there could offer you lots of "been there, done that" support.

Best of luck!

Breast feed if possible. Yes, you can BF twins! Put both in the same crib and use cloth diapers. As they get older, make some of their baby foods. Apply for WIC and/or food stamps. And have your tubes tied after their birth. That's what I did after my twins were born (I also had 3 other children including a 13 month old). Join a Mother of Twins Club if there is one in your area (http://www.nomotc.org/). They can be a great help with resources and advise. Good luck to you.

I was happy for you until I saw that you can't afford who you have. Send them to me! We couldn't have children (my second marriage-two from first) and I cried and I cried. And cried some more. I can take care of them and you can have their birthday celebration when they are twenty one!
