Has Anyone Had Experience with Chiropractor and Treatment of Allergies?

My son (4 years old) has some allergies (dust mites, cats/dogs, peanuts). So far he doesn't show up as having pollen allergies but my husband is allergic to pretty much all grasses and trees so I have the feeling my son will be also. My son has always had difficulty breathing through his nose, especially at night. When he was 2, we had his adenoids removed and at 3, he was prescribed by his allergist Flonase and Singulair nightly before bed. It does help slightly but most nights he still wakes himself up several times with a stuffed up nose and not able to breathe though his nose. We do saline spray daily as well, which does seem to help a bit. My daughter has similar allergies and has had a chronic cough for months.

My question is related to chiropractors. (I also have a question about allergy shots but I will save that for a separate post!)
A friend of mine was telling me she takes her kids to a chiropractor for adjustments a few times a year to help their immune system. I've been reading up a bit on how it can potentially help with allergies - I did take them for their first session the other day. I just wanted to see if anyone had been in a similar situation and if they have seen any positive results. I was so reluctant to have my kids on any type of daily medication at such a young age..but at the same time, he has had difficulity breathing for so long that we had/have to do something. Thanks in advance for any experiences!!

*Edit: Maybe I should clarify that I am not suggesting that the chiropractor is going to cure my son's peanut allergy. I was asking more if anyone had relief with congestion/nasal allergy issues after seeing a chiropractor. Thanks to everyone!

Let's think on this a moment. What, possibly could a spinal adjustment do to affect a histamine response at a cellular level? Based upon what I know if anatomy and physiology, I would say...nothing. The idea smacks of quackery, in my opinion.

I would take him to an allergist and start the immunotherapy process. The sooner he develops a tolerance to these allergies, the sooner he can be off meds entirely.

Good luck.

Without responding to any one person on here but you...I KNOW that chiropractic care will help with your son's allergies. Chiropractic care is not simply cracking your back or making pain go away. Chiropractic care is the worlds largest health care system that is drug free. It is completely about the neurological system which is the very first thing that develops in a mother's womb. Everyone knows that the brain controls everything. We learn that in elementary school. The brain has to have a way to communicate with the body. That way is down the spinal cord and out through the spinal nerves. Is there ANYTHING the brain does not control?

When there is a misalignment of a spinal bone it puts pressure on the spinal nerve thus causing irritation, inflammation and eventually dysfunction. The dysfunction begins long before there is any pain....only about 8 percent of spinal nerves are capable of feeling pain. How many of you have seen someone say, "I just leaned over and I pulled my back out." I reached for a pencil and I buckled." That didn't just happen, it was there for a long time.

To answer your question. I have seen with my own eyes, allergies go away. Mine for one. I have not suffered in years. Children heal quickly because they have not had years of damage....but every tumble they take, even the birthing process is trauma on the spine. Technology and a more sedentary lifestyle also plays into allergies. The spinal nerves in the upper back...where we look at our ipad or our phone.....communicate with the eyes, ears, nose, throat and thyroid. The old term "military neck" has now been renamed by the medical community as "text neck." Its where the natural banana shape curve of our neck is lost. It affects the spinal cord and its function.

GO to icpa4kids.com and read...find a pediatric specialist in your area. If you have any questions, shoot me a PM. I'll be glad to help.

Regards,
M.

Most of the people responding "no" are ignorant to the full suite of chiropractic practice. As you already know, it's not just "cracking your back." I see a chiropractor for overall health and wellness and while some of my sessions include physical manipulation to relieve pockets of pain or misalignment, much of my work with my chiropractor is in applied kinesiology and he is also a naturopathic doctor. Chiropractic for children is very effective because their bodies haven't had years and years of bad habits throwing things off. Some kids need just a few sessions and then periodic maintenance to get things lined up for optimal function and immune response. As you know, nothing happens in the body in isolation - our bodies are an incredibly complex machine with systems that talk to each other and react to each other in ways beyond what we understand or can document with "modern" medicine. It makes perfect sense to give this a try and see if it helps - if it helps, great. If not, you're out what you paid but haven't subjected your child to anything risky or added more medication into his body. Let us know how it goes!

Allergy Treatment By Chiropractors

The Bottom Line

There is certainly no reason to believe that chiropractors can offer anything special to allergy patients. Although SB 352 was drafted in order to save lives, the current version would also protect pocketbooks from a wide variety of practices that waste their time and money.

We heard the same things and did this for years for myself, my husband and our son. We got no relief at all from allergies. We also took high-end, single ingredient drops he recommended. Lost a lot of money, kept the allergies. We did get relief from some back/neck ache problems, and one of us learned that one leg was shorter than the other so a lift was added to one shoe. Those things helped.

I did other supplementation and got rid of all my symptoms of allergies, and I no longer take any medication and don't get shots. We've had a couple of bad spring allergy seasons in the northeast, and I'd say I've had about 6 uncomfortable days in 6 years. I manage those with more food science answers and occasionally with an over-the-counter allergy aid just for those few bad days.

I've been trained in food science and nutritional epigenetics, and I work as an educator in these areas. I have seen many people improve their immune systems, and we use independent clinical studies, university researchers, etc., as the basis for this. I do my training with many chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and physicians - all because they feel that their practices aren't sufficient to deal with allergies, immune system support, autoimmune condition reduction, and so on. A colleague of mine did the allergy tests and was allergic to everything except 4 trees, and her 1 year old was on a nebulizer 3 weeks out of 4. They are all symptom free now, and didn't do spinal adjustments for it.

Good chiropractors will tell you that you should get relief (maybe not total, but significant) after a few sessions. Any chiropractor that tells you to keep on coming back forever I think should be questioned.

I'd really question anything you're going to give a child. I really focus heavily on where things are made, under what conditions, and whether they are safe. I don't use things that have warning labels on them, which many supplements do.

I don't suffer from allergies. But I would definitely try it. I don't hint it's claiming to eliminate the allergy but to drain and line things up to lesson the symptoms of the allergies. Good luck. Poor kido

I can't say that it helps my immune system - or that it's even the main reason I go, but I can tell you that my chiropractor can clear my sinuses in 30 seconds.

He's taught me all about how the body is all connected, and how muscular health ties into upper respiratory health. And I can tell you it's not BS at all.
I've had allergies my whole life, and while he's not gotten rid of them, he's helped me work through the congestion and muscle soreness (think traps, chest, ribs) that comes along with constantly sniffing and struggling to get a deep breath.

A cool trick to vaildate...
Find where your sternum connects to your rib cage. At that central point, gently use your fingers to lift and separate your ribs away from your sternum. Think of pulling up and out a bit. Again...gently. Notice your sinuses right behind your nose drain as soon as you do it.
Same things applies to tight lats, lower ribs, tight abdominal...
It's really cool.

So, I'd suggest it. It'll help him. It won't cure the allergies, but it'll help him breathe easier.

I've heard of acupuncture for allergies, but not chiropractic adjustments for allergies. Acupuncture has worked for my husband and a few close friends with severe seasonable allergies.

ETA: Please do not give your child medication as suggested by one of the other posters. I'm not saying you'd do this, and this is more directed at the continual medical/pharmacological recommendations here on the forum. What works for one person may have no benefit in another, and in fact, may be contraindicated depending on the person's medical condition, history, current medications, and other factors. Yes, a pharmacist can check for medication interactions, but allergy and immunology issues are complicated, and additions to a child's (or anyone's) medication regimen should occur in consultation with the prescribing physician----even if it is over-the-counter medication. Sorry for the digression but felt this needed to be said (again).

ORIGINAL:
I have not and would not consider chiropractic care for treatment of our family's allergies.

The only thing that has ever helped our family (full of allergies) is a highly experienced and credentialed physician, an allergist/immunologist. He has changed our lives for the better in so many ways. I did have immunotherapy (shots through this office )for years, and this was very effective. However, I also had long-standing sinus problems and ultimately had to have sinus surgery, which helped me tremendously. I am not suggesting this is the case with your son, just something to consider and discuss with your allergist.

Does your child sleep with lots of stuffed animals? Have carpet and drapes in his room? These things collect dust and irritants (even when you clean routinely) that can contribute to nasal congestion. Do you have allergy-reducing pillow and mattress covers? These things can also help if dust and pollens are contributing factors. Also, be sure your child showers before bed to rid the body and hair of pollens and potential dander he may pick up when playing outside.

I know you asked specifically about experience with chiropractors, but my very, very long history of dealing with allergies has never included chiropractors. We have had great success with traditional, accepted medical practices in dealing with allergies. It takes time and patience to find the right treatment plan, and those plans often have to be adapted and updated over time.

My sister took her son for extreme cat allergies and it helped a lot. He is still allergic, but does not have as bad reactions.

I go once a month for well visits with my daughter and it helps keep us healthy. We get sick, but it never lasts as long as other people and we rarely need medications (my daughter will be 9 this month and has never taken antibiotics or any other drugs, and yes we see a regular medical doctor too when needed).

This has always worked well for me and my daughter (she has gone since birth), I know other people don't like to go or have not had good results.

I give the kids Children's Liquid Sudafed. I get it at a locally owned pharmacy. Walmart actually told me I was ignorant to how things changed and that Sudafed wasn't even made anymore....riiiiiight...

Anyway. Regular pharmacies that order their own meds can get it from Rugby or another company they order from.

Make sure it's real Sudafed and not the fake one. That one makes my heart race and it's always ineffective too.

Real Sudafed opens my airways and sinuses. I can take 1/2 adult dose and that is ENOUGH>

I NEVER give the kids more than 1/4 - 1/2 child dose and it works. Why give them more med than it takes to open them up.

Benedryl will stop the allergic reaction but it will also dry them out so much it's painful and they can get nose bleeds. Check with the local pharmacist about using real liquid Sudafed. 1/2 teaspoon at most. At bedtime.

There have been a few studies done on chiropractic care for several things beyond alignments, etc, they come to the same conclusion, that there is no conclusive evidence that chiropractic care works to alleviate other complaints (allergies, ADHD, etc). I would start with your family physician, and if you are hesitant about using medications, ask what other VIABLE options are out there to try.
