I know that it is a normal for your hair to fall out after pregnancy until about 8 months, but can someone out there please reasure me that I am not going bald. I just want to hear other peoples stories about this. My hair is coming out in handfuls and it seemed to be worse with my daughter than it was with my son. Can someone please share their story so I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

What can I do next?

I have a 4month old daughtor and my hair is also falling out. Try using a wide tooth comb it makes less hair fall out.

Mine did the same thing. I think it is due to the fact that while PG and bf we do not lose much if any hair. I was losing handfuls too. I never went bald but I do not have alot of breakage. You might want to go get a cut maybe add some layers that will help.

Hi T.,
This exact thing happened to me after I had my son. I lost my hair in large amounts for over 6 months, and I was sure I was going bald. My hair stylist reassured me it is very common and it won't last, and it didn't. I did lose quite a bit of hair, though, and when it started growing back, I had little short spikey hairs that didn't blend very well with my long hair, but after about 2 or 3 weeks of new hair growth, it looked fine. Don't worry...the hair loss won't last -- no need to get the Rogaine!
Hope this helps,
M.

Hi,
I did not experience this with my boys but I had a little girl 20 months ago and for the last 20 months I've been losing my hair. I have heard that your hair takes 5 years to fully recover from one pregnancy, I had three children in three years so it looks like I'm screwed for at least another 10 years :)
There have been times when I've noticed a decrease in the amount of hair I'm losing it's mostly when I'm taking my multi-vitamins and Flax Seed oil gel caps. my hair actually started to get thicker after about four weeks straight of taking them every day but its been about six weeks since I've taken anything and I'm noticing the handfuls of hair again.
My grandmother was a nutritionist and she taught my mom everything she knew and one of those things was flax seed oil will help thicken and strengthen your hair and nails.

I have had three kids, and my hair came out during and after pregnancy with all of them. It does stop falling out after all your hormones get back to normal. However if you continue to have the problem for a real long time, i would ask your doctor to check your thyroid hormone level, which can contribute to hair loss. I know this because i have a thyroid condition. I wouldn't worry too much. This is pretty normal.

Don't worry my baby is six months and for a minute i thought i was going to be bald. I just stopped shedding last month. It all depends on the person and hormones.

Hi T. -
I can assure you everything is fine as experienced the same thing with my 10 month old son. It is very scary at times because the hair falls out in large clumps. I specifically remember 5 and 6 months postpartum being the worse for me with this problem. I actually thought that all the hair loss was supposed to occur in the first 3 months postpartum b/c a lot of books and internet searches indicated this. I saw my dr who said really this can go all the way until a year postpartum as the body readjusts, etc.

My hair definently fell out during and after pregnanacy, especially with my middle daughter. Every pregnancy is different so sometimes it will fall out more than other times.

It's normal for your hair to fall out and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. Your hormones are just playing catch up. My hair fell out for more than a year after the birth of my son. It finally started coming back and now it's fine (he's 20 mths).
I brushed and brushed in order to control where and when the hair came out. It will come out, it might as well be in the brush instead of in your soup. In other words, a wide tooth comb will not help, you will just find the hair somewhere else.

HONEST!!!!!
It does stop. Mine went until my sone was almost a year. If you are really worried check with your Dr and he will probably get you some vitamins or supplements or something as well.
Good luck,

I was in the same boat with my youngest daughter. Many say that it is supposed last a certain amount of time. But when I talked to my doctor it all depends on when you stopped shedding during your pregnancy and multiply that by three. That is the normal time frame that you will continue to lose hair. Don't worry you won't go bald, then only hair coming out is the hair that you were supposed to shed.

Well you being a nurse you should know a little bit HA HA just joking I am a nurse also It is hard to answer your own questions... Are you eating right? Have any other S&S assoc w/hair loss? I myself had the same problem after my 3rd child but it was assoc. with other S&S I ended up being dx with Lupus... 8 months is a while to lose hair like that... There are alot of reasons why it could be something else too.. But I think that you are fine.. Are you breastfeeding? If you are you might want to change your diet around a little

I had hair fall out for like a year after my son was born. I asked my hairdresser for reassurance and she told me it was perfectly normal and she sees it all the time. My husband even noticed and said I should call the doc till I told him it was normal. Enjoy your baby! :)

When I had my son last year, the same thing happened. My hair was nice a full when I was pregnant, and then I began to shed shortly after birth. I attributed to hormones. I did give myself a few protein treatments and that helped, and now a year later, my hair is normal.

My son is now 14 months and I still have to deal with this. My hair is not falling out in clumps anymore now it is growing back. I lost what seemed like a whole litter of cats in my shower over the first few months but now I have noticed that some of that hair is coming back so you can imagine it started out as tons of little "fly-aways" and now I feel like I have this undercoat of hair like a dog that slowly over time is growing back out. I guess this is just one of those things you have to deal with to make beautiful babies.

Hi T.. I'm a hair stylist and I've had this problem myself also. 3months after I had my daughter my hair started coming out. To my awful suprise it never really came back. I had tried lots of things like Nioxin Shampoo, vitamins. It's been 8 years now and although I'm not bald I was fearing the worst. I bought rogaine. The generic kind from K mart. I've been using it for 3 months and my hair is finally coming back! Thank God! I'm not gonna stop using it either. So if ya notice it not growing back in , which it should, give rogaine for women a try.

Oh, mine fell out too (with both pregnancies). Then when it started growing back I noticed it most around my temples... My husband calls them my "wings" because I have about 1 1/2 inches of regrowth mixed in with all the rest of my long hair. When I pull it into a ponytail we really notice it. I use Lots of hair gel to hold them down for now ;)

When I was pregnant with my daughter I lost tons of hair. I thought I was going bald also it was a mess. Receding hairline and all. But about 3-6 mos after I delivered it started growing back and stopped falling out! Thank goodness I never complain about my hair anymore I LOVE IT!!
