Gouge in Daughter's Front Tooth

Hi Moms,
My five-year-old daughter has a big gouge-y thing in one of her front baby teeth. It's not the top that is chipped, it is the front of her tooth. I don't know how she did it and just barely noticed it. Does this need to hurry and be filled by the dentist, or can we just ignore it? I am worried that it will lead to quicker tooth decay or something.

Thanks,
M.

Hi, as an ex military wife... my suggestion is this... you have free or very reasonable dental care, see a pediadontist (kids dentist) and confirm there is no serious damage to the baby tooth. If there is no real damage let it go... don't pay crazy amounts of money on a tooth that will fall out soon enough. If the Dr. recomends repair then do... but my thought is why throw your money away if you don't have to... and thank you to you and your husband for all the sacrifices you and your family makes for me and mine. My children are grown now, one is in the Navy and one is signed up for early enlistment for the Marine Corp. so thank you....D.

I actually have one of those though it's fairly small on my front tooth. We never did anything about it until my Dentist in college suggest he fill it with some sort of clear stuff to keep food particles from being caught in it and perhaps from any chance of decay. I doubt it's a huge issue but your daughter might be more comfortable too, if it's filled.

My guess is it would be fine, however, I think a quick visit to the dentist might not be a bad idea. I knew a gal whose daughter lost two front teeth from decay and she had such self esteem issues and wouldn't smile, it was sad. That being said, if money is a bit tight and running to the dentist is a rough thought, you can wait it out a bit and see if anything happens. Just be sure to brush it often and if you see any change run her in. Also consider that she will be losing it in a year to two anyways.

Good luck.

Hi Marci - I wouldnt worry about it too much - it's going to be gone when she's 6 anyway. Only reason to call dentist would be if she is having any pain in that tooth or if it starts to turn dark. Just brush it normally.

If the chip is not hurting her, the dentist probably won't do anything, since it's a baby tooth. My girls have chipped baby teeth, and nothing needed to be done.
But I'd call or bring your daughter to the dentist if you're concerned, and let the dentist make sure it's not a risk in any way.
