In July, my family and I are going to Italy. The ped said to give my daughter benadryl to make her sleep, which Im hoping will be as peaceful as it sounds. (I heard that lollipops help with the ears)Has anyone traveled to another country with a baby? I have been told that you have to keep your stuff close to you, because people in the streets will steal right off your body. Which makes me worry (as a mom) that someone will try to take my baby. That sounds crazy saying that.. but I am kind of scared. Is she ok in her stroller?

What can I do next?

OMG relax!!!!!!!!!She'll be fine in her stroller. IF it will put your mind at ease goggle Italian newspapers/stories and see if you can do a search for anything remotely like that. Go have a wonderful time and enjoy the sites. They have the same probs with pick pockets as any US tourist destination. Just remember the basic rules of travel and you and your family will be fine.
Have a Great Trip!

Hi K.,
My one suggestion would be that if your daughter has never had benadryl, to try it before you go. My friends son has the reverse reaction to benadryl and starts to bounce off the walls uncontrollably but my children are fine with it so I would just try it once or twice before you go to make sure she is ok taking it. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

I lived in Sicily for 1 1/2 years and there isn't anything to worry about. For the most part everyone loves babies and they'll oooh and ahh over yours. She'll be fine in a stroller. Just keep an eye on her like you would anywhere else.

there are child size earplugs called earplanes. very comfy and help a lot during takeoff and landing. also lollipop. wouldn't give her medicine, could have the total reverse effect from what you want.
take medication with you while on the trip, motrin, tylenol, claritin, benadryl, triaminic etc. you never know what you'll find there. also make sure you have plenty of snacks on the plane, a drawing board, maybe a dvd player with a few of her favorite cartoons. don't freak out. there are pickpocketers everywhere, goping for pockets and purses, therefore i recommend one of those around the waist money belts to put in your passports and cash that you might have. don't leave passports and tix in a hotel room. make sure you make copies of passports and tix and leave copies with someone whom you have fast access to in the states if needed (faster getting passports through the embassy in case yours gets stolen-
good luck

Hi! I'd try the Benadryl trick prior to the flight if it'll be the first time giving it to her. It has the complete opposite effect on my children and actually acts as a stimulant and keeps them awake. I'd hate to find that out on such a long flight. I think your daughter will be fine in her stroller buckled in. One thing to consider may be a back-pack for her to be in. The streets & sidewalks are so narrow and busy that the stroller may not be most practical. Just a thought!
