Gnats...driving Me Nuts

So Kris (my husband) bought a whole pineapple. I thought they ate it one day so I completely forgot about it. We are reorganizing our kitchen and our dining room table is full of stuff...the pineapple was sat on the table and forgotten about, until a few days ago when I couldn't figure out where the dang gum gnats are coming from. So I followed the line and found this pineapple. UGH...anyway I have tried the vinegar, soap and water, I have the sticky traps hanging up. And they still are growing in number.

I have searched on here and all over the web to find anything I can, not much more than what I already have tried. I am getting ready to pour bleach down the garbage disposal as soon as I am done writing this.

Please help me if you have any other ideas, I am having guest over tomorrow night and I don't want them to have to fight them off....

What can I do next?

We have been bombarded with gnats at work. Nothing has worked, except bowls of cider vinegar. Stinky but effictive. Good luck

We got fruit flies really bad with the fresh fruit we had out. I've had to start keeping it in the fridge.

We looked online and found this idea and it WORKS!

take a small bowl, put about 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar in it and a drop of dishwashing liquid.

You'll be amazed that within hours, little gnats are in the cider, DEAD.

I keep a little bowl in the pantry where my garbage cans are located and on the counter in the kitchen. I change it out regularly.

Put any and all fruit in the fridge. Once you have them they will use even unripe fruit to multiply. Clean out all your sink traps, not just the one in the kitchen. They are called fruit flies or bar flies because that is their favorite foods. They will eat and breed in the organic gunk that is in any sink trap. Another thing is make sure your sink is not leaking. I had that happen, nasty surprise. :(

If you have a bottle of beer in the house, open it, drink some (it will help your nerves) and leave it on the counter. You will find them all dead in there in a couple days.

TF's plan sounds good. We used a glass of red wine and that worked well!

I've found they're more attracted to white wine than vinegar.

We had a bad problem earlier in the summer while we were re-modeling too. We found this gnat traps at ACE Hardware. The were tiny and looked like little pears, you put the liquid it comes with in them and let them sit out.

We also did the vinegar thing, that worked really well too. We also made a big bowl of kool-aid and poured dish soap in it and they loved that too, we left it on the kitchen table for a few days. It was probably a week before they were all gone.

My brother put the vinegar & soap in a cup and put plastic wrap over the top, punched some small holes in the top and was able to trap them that way. They couldn't get out. I'm gonna try that next time...

This works EVERY time:

~take a small glass and fill half with red wine. (really, size/amount doesn't matter. Just don't want you to think you need a half bottle of wine for this)

~cover with clear plastic wrap.

~place rubber band around the rim, over the plastic wrap.

~poke small holes in the plastic wrap.

~set glass in the area where the gnats are highly concentrated.

The way it works is that they can find their way in, but have a hard time getting out... drunk, drown, poisoned, etc.
Try it! You will be amazed!

This is going to sound really funny, but for some reason I had a ton of gnats or baby flies in my bathroom...strangest thing. Anyway, I vacuumed them up!
I got out the hose attachment and just sucked away!

Never had a problem with them after that...still don't know how they were multiplying and what they were after.

What worked for us was red wine. Just pour a half glass of red wine and leave it on the counter. The gnats will drown in it.

Funny story - when my MIL visited a few years back, (she's an alcoholic) I had a glass of wine on the counter for the gnats. My daughter, then 4, must have heard me telling my husband about the wine and gnats, so knew it was for the gnats. I'm not sure she understood that it was for the gnats to be attracted to and fall in and drown, or whether she thought it was for them to drink, but when my MIL poured herself a glass of wine one afternoon, and walked into the family room, my daughter saw her and cried, "Hey! That's the gnats' wine!" You probably had to be there to think it was funny. But her little expression was so outraged that Grandma took the gnats' wine!

Anyway - good luck! Let us know what helps.

I agree with everyone about the red wine - you don't have gnats - you have fruit flies - you could use some kind of fruit juice to attract them if you use the plactic wrap covered glass I suppose - but red wine really does the trick - I got to where I enjoyed watching those little pests get in there and drink themselves to death! (Bad me)
