My 18 month old recently had blood work done and shows she has celiac disease, which means she should avoid wheat, barley, and rye products. Where can I buy gluten-free foods and what types of food can I give her?

What can I do next?

Whole Foods Markets often have very good community relations staffs (in Vienna, it's Katie Wolffe) and those staffs do special tours of the stores at times. I bet that if you called your nearest Whole Foods and explained to community relations that you need help navigating the world of gluten-free foods, they will either let you know about upcoming tours or, if you ask, they might even have someone show you personally around and help you determine what's there. One other thing -- often if one member of the family has restrictions it's helpful and supportive if the entire family goes off the restricted food, so you might try reducing or even elminating gluten for all of you. (Naturally, let the gluten-eaters have some treats now and then!) Good luck! Also, dont' forget online searches for baking mixes etc. that might be gluten free.

look on the internet for help. My daughter was showing signs of celiac's but ended up testing negative. I don't remember the websites but there are websites out there with recipes etc. just google celiac disease.

I know organic markets have a lot of gluten free products. Also the Giant I shop at has an org section. I would buy a book on the subject if I was you. Best wishes.

you can get gluten-free products at most grocery stores now. However the least expensive and easiest foods to make the main starch of your daughter's meal would be potatos, rice, and corn. All three of these are gluten free and will supplement well the meat and veggies that your daughter can still eat. There are also rice noodles at the store so that she can still eat spaghetti.
