Giving Birth While Sick???

Hello Ladies :)
Simple question... have any of you ever been sick while giving birth? My due date was yesterday and I have been sick since Friday. I'm just very nervous #1 about giving birth and not being in tip top shape to do so and #2 about getting my baby girl sick as soon as she comes out :( Anyone ever gone through this? What was the outcome? Did they give you anything at the hospital to help subside the sickness? Any information or personal experience is greatly appreciated!

K. :)

What can I do next?

I was sick when I gave birth to my little boy last January. I had been sick for weeks and felt terrible. The birth went as smoothly as those things can go. They didn't give me anything for my cold/flu/whatever it was but they asked that no sick people visit (very funny to me at the time). My little one came out very healthy and even though he was with me all the time and never caught my cold.

Hope this helps.

you probably don't need to worry about getting your daughter sick when she is born if you breastfeed... your body produces antibodies to whatever you are sick with and trying to fight and she gets all those through the milk, so so should be ok

I had a baby while our family had stomach flu. I imagine that's what caused me to go into labor. I'd been throwing up, diarrhea, fatigue for 3 days. I lied and said we were all fine even though I felt terrible. I did this because in '69 they would take your baby and quarantine her if there was illness in your home. I was so beat and didn't enjoy my baby much until a couple of days had passed, but we survived, not any worse off.

I had bronchitis and a sinus infection when I gave birth to my daughter. I got put on antibiotics the day that I went in to labor with her (I had one dose in me at her birth). Nothing else was done and she never got sick either. I just made sure I washed my hands constantly. I am sure it will be fine just make sure they know you are sick and what your symptoms are.

what are you sick with.. my friend had a baby while she had shingles and she was not allowed to touch the baby and the baby went right to the nicu... mom had to get better from shingles before sehcould hold the baby..

I'm an OB nurse and have seen women deliver while being sick. Sometimes, dependin on what it was, they've been induced. What are you sick with? It is sinus/upper respiratory? or more like vomitting? Stay hydrated, get as much as possible. There could be medications that you can take to help you feel better, depending on what you're sick with.
The baby will not get sick from you. If other family members are sick when you deliver, make sure they wash their hands well before they touch her, and maybe even wear masks so they don't breathe on her (the less exposure from others, the better).
Also, when you do go in, if other friends/family members are sick, please ask them not to go to the hospital to see you and the baby...they can see you both when they're feeling better. There's alot going around already, and other patients may be very susceptible.
Good luck! hope you feel better!

Unless you are planning an induction the odds of you having baby while still sick are low...Unless you stay sick for a couple more days... If you deliver before you are germ free, The immunities that your body has been building to fight off the illness are flowing in her blood and when coupled with nursing there are very good odds that she will not even get sick.
Relax as much as possible and rest... You will need it soon. :-)

I would think your body would hold off until you have the strength to give birth and I would really doubt that you'd infect your baby. Like a previous post said, your building up the baby's immunities right now.

The nurses at the hospital when I had my son said that babies are pretty safe and full of moms immunities unil they are about 2 months. Then they start to lose the immunity they were born with and are more likely to get sick.
