Giving Away Husband's Clothing

I've seen this in a couple tv shows lately (yes, I know they're not real) but it got me thinking and I'm just curious - do you give away your husband's (or any family member's) clothing (or any items) without asking them?

I would NEVER dream of going thru closets and getting rid of stuff without asking. I will admit I have hidden a t-shirt of my husband's that is just absolutely hideous (tie-dyed very bright colors) but I wouldn't get rid of it. As for my kids, I always tell them to clean out their closets of old clothing and toys and then I go thru everything before it gets donated because I'll pull out stuff that can go to my nieces or nephews.

How do you handle cleaning out closets?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's fun to see how everyone handles different situations; I'm glad to see others share the same feelings as I do.

As for hiding the hideous t-shirt of my husband's - I'm not sure he even knows it's hidden - but it embarrasses the heck out of my kids when we go out; otherwise, I wouldn't care. As for him hiding my clothes - his mind doesn't think that way; plus, I don't have any hideous clothing!! lol!!

Thanks everyone!!

I do!

I buy and sort/donate ALL the clothes in my family. I buy my husbands clothes....& I donate them when I wish, he trusts me completely...the only thing I know not to touch is his O-L-D Cubs T-shirt & his O-L-D gray Army PT t-shirt! Other than that I have free reign!

Yeah, I once got rid of a super old shirt that my husband kept hanging on to ... whoopsie! Made it right into the Goodwill bag and out the door.

Next up? His Dio concert shirt w/ the beast on it. :)

*insert evil laugh*

Yes I give my kids' clothes away all the time. Otherwise they'd be wearing things that are 4 sizes too small because they like them. My older kids can do this themselves (they're 15) but for my 9 & 7 year old? I purge at will.

I don't give my husband's clothes away, but I will toss things that are torn or stained or full of holes and just never mention it to him. Sometimes I'll bag up things I know don't fit him or he doesn't wear and I'll stash them in the basement. Then 6 months later I'll pull out a dusty, musty bag and say "hey you haven't worn these in ages, can I bring them to St. Vincent's?" and after asking few times, eventually he'll just agree that they can go and out they go.

If he was a hoarder and too much stuff and wouldn't give anything away, ever but wouldn't miss things, then yes I would purge his things too. Unreasonable people require unreasonable treatment.

I give hubby and each kid the chance to go thru it themselves and tell them if they don't downsize, then *I* will do it for them. I have a "donate" hamper in our master closet so we are good about throwing stuff in there we don't want anymore. But the kids actually prefer me to go through theirs. The first time I did it, I went crazy, got rid of tons of stuff and not only downsized everything, but rearranged their entire rooms while they were at their dads. They came home and their rooms were spotless...they LOVED it! This week my son is away at bible camp and I'm working on his room. My daughter will be gone next week and I will do hers. I tend to know the kids pretty well and would never get rid of something I think means something to them. It works for us. =)

I would never give away another person's clothing, or things... without asking.
And I wouldn't want anyone else to do that to me.
With my kids, I go over it with them.
And its fine.

I have some things that were from my late Dad. I make sure to tell my kids and my Husband, NEVER to get rid of these. I even have a cashmere sweater that was a favorite of his. I can and do wear it. Its pretty unisex. I plan to give it to my son, when he is older. It looks brand new.

Yes, I do, because he doesn't pay attention to his clothes and if I don't go through them he will go to work with pants with a split seam down the fanny, and that's just not something anyone needs to see.

But, seriously, I do because I am the one who buys all his clothes, cares for them, and knows when they aren't being worn any longer. In our 12 years together he's never gotten upset with me for giving away any of his clothes. Actually, within 2 months of dating I went through his entire closet and purged every single one of his Bill Cosby sweaters and most of his fleece zip up vests. He was sitting on the bed while I went through it, pleading for his ripped up GB Packer's sweatshirt.

I have to go through and edit. I give him a deadline and if he has not done it by the deadline, I go through and pull out clothing that does not fit or is worn out. I am talking 32 in waist pants, he is now a 40 waist pant. He owned the jeans since high School.. Even the 38 in pants from 10 yrs ago, I had to give away..

As I fold clothing, if there is something really worn out.. Holes, tears, stained. I throw those away too. IF he sees me throwing them away, he will insist he can still wear them!!! So I hide them in the kitchen trash and pour left overs on them.

We have been married over 30 years. He is severely ADHD and it is painful (he will tell you) to throw anything away..

I even threw away his "favorite" blanket. We purchased it at a garage sale. It was already pretty worn out.. But he loved it. After using it on camping trips and washing it so many times.. It was completely falling apart. I threw it away.. and as usual, my husband has not even noticed.

If he ever does ask, I will just say, I do not know? Maybe it is in the garage?

No. When my daughter was little, I would purge clothing that she had outgrown, but that's it.
My ex LOVED Hawaiian shirts - the louder the better. I thoguht they were hideous, and cringed inside every time he put one on. But I would not dream of getting rid of them or hiding them from him. In fact, because HE loved them so much, I bought him three new ones for Yule.
And if he had taken it upon himself to get rid of (or hide) clothing of mine because HE didn't like it, I would have been livid.

Things like socks or underwear I toss out as I see holes in them and pick up more when needed. If something else is too battered to keep I point it out and then toss it out. Sometimes my husband likes to keep a ratty pair or 2 of jeans and a couple shirts to throw on when he mows the lawn and works on the yard. But there comes a point where they become too ratty and get tossed out.
I would never go through the rest of my husband's closet without his input though. Thankfully he's good at letting go of things that have outlived their usefulness.
My kids outgrow everything in one fell swoop so I go in, clear everything out in the smaller size and leave the current size. It's not worth holding on to anything "through the summer" or whatever because when they don't fit they really don't fit, not even as play clothes.
I have one son that is brutal to his clothing. The rule in the house is if I can see underpants through the holes they get tossed out. When he can't stand the size of the other holes in his pants (he not only gets them in the knees but the backs of the legs and in the seat!) they get tossed out. If I need him to look nice for a particular event I buy a new pair of pants that he does not wear until the event. When there aren't many wearable pairs left in his closet we buy a couple more to keep him going. This is the same kid that kills shoes faster than my other 2. Right now you can see his sock through the hole, he's getting new shoes tomorrow LOL

I tell my hubby from time to time that he needs to go through his clothes. I usually drag I'm to the store first, though, and get him to buy new clothes. Then he cleans out the closet to make room for the new.

Every so often (read: years), I suggest to my husband that he might want to thin the herd, so to speak. We take the more ordinary clothing to the Goodwill (tees, usually) and I have encouraged him to trade the cool, vintage clothes that he doesn't wear as often for a credit at vintage shops, to find something he would wear now instead.

Would I ever get rid of his clothes without his consent? Absolutely not, although a few beloved-but-raggedy boxers got the 'finishing rip' while removing them from the laundry. Ooops!;)

As soon as I see my son's outgrown something, we set it aside. Either it moves on to a younger neighbor or we donate it to Goodwill or the women's shelter.

when my husband was gone on a three week business trip, I cleaned out the den and got rid of AT LEAST 4 bags (black outside garbage bags) of stuff. I donated a minivan full of stuff (no exaggeration) to our local charity.

I have not gotten rid of clothes from his closet or dresser.

I have my kids try on clothes - usually like one pair of jeans (we typically have GAP jeans) and shorts - and then I go through the rest - that size that was too small? Gone. Shorts that don't match the size that do fit? gone!

Toys? I typically ask first - if they are in my "mom box" (the box of stuff they didn't pick up) and they didn't want to earn it back? GONE!! BABY GONE!!

My husband is the one to clean out his own closet and urge me to clean out mine and my daughters, the latter which is hard because it's mostly baby clothes.

I would never give anything away without asking, but then again, our roles are reversed.

We donate to Big Brother's Big Sisters, or the local thrift shop.

No I wouldn't just throw anything of his away, without asking. I wouldn't want him doing that to me so if we are cleaning things out, and going through stuff, we just check with the other first.

I go through the kiddo's all the time, but hubby is in charge of his own clothes, whether I hate them or not. The only exception was when I bought him new underpants because his old ones had huge holes and were being held together by wishes, I threw the old ones out and replaced them with new.

My husband would be SO annoyed if I did that, although I'm always tempted to since his closet is FULL of t-shirts he never wears. My plan is to find the ones I don't think he wears, put them in a pile, and make him go through it so I can get rid of them. I won't let the pile sit there forever either - he'll have to go through it right away!

I'd be happy to do it for my husband if he wanted me to, OR if I had a problem with him hoarding clothes. But he doesn't, and he is happy to go through his own clothes. I am also happy to not have to deal with his clothes. I've done it for years with my kids and I don't want to have to do another person's if I don't have to!!

I go through the kids stuff as I wash it. I have no use for wasting my time washing and drying stuff that is too small or worn out. Why do that? I have a couple of tubs under my folding table. One is for off season clothes that will still fit next time that season comes around then the other one is for clothes that are too little.

Takes all the guess work out of their clothes. I control what is in their closet.
