The tool idea is great but then add a extra little touch by engraving a small message on it. Just a thought.
I think the tools are a great idea too! If not that maybe a nice pocket knife or zippo lighter. Those are things he will keep for a long time and would remind him of when he received them.
I don't know what type of gift you have in mind. The first thing that came to my mind.....Since he is new in this profession....some specific tools that he would use on a daily basis with a kit for them? He would think of you and appreciate the tools. I am talking HIGH quality tools.
If he hopes to start his own business, does he need anything like books on how to start his own business, or a maybe a computer and/or software where he can manage his customers/invoices/expenses? Maybe some nice business cards with his contact information so that he can pass those out to people he meets? We have a fridge magnet from our HVAC guy so that any time we need him, the number is right there where we need it. Maybe something like that?
