Getting My 11 Month Old to Sleep

I am hoping for some advice on getting my 11 month old daughter to sleep later than 5:30am. Currently she takes 2 naps daily. The first nap is at 9am and the second at 1:30pm. She naps for about 2-3 hours total a day and goes to bed at 7pm. I've tried putting her to bed earlier and later and it hasn't seemed to help. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Wow 2 naps and goes to bed early. You have it made. I would say take one nap away and see if you daughter sleeps in later. My 6 year old son just started getting up at 6 every morning - good luck

Hi P.,
I have a 17mth old and he is on the same schedule pretty much- he naps at 9am for an hour and then again at around 2pm and sleeps from 8pm-6am. Maybe try keeping her up until 8pm. I don't think there is any exact science! I would love him to sleep until 7am- but that is wishful thinking! Good luck. I know this wasn't helpful- but i just wanted you to know my little one is on the same schedule and has been for many months. Just flow with it and i guess be happy you don't have middle-of-the-night wakings!

Hi P..
I had the same problem--forever, it seemed. It did stop around 15 months, but I wish someone had suggested this earlier: go in, briefly comfort the child with the lights off, some even say not to pick them up. Say something firm and soft like "it is early, go back to sleep", maybe wind up a mobile or a lullabye thingy and leave the room. When she cries, let her cry for a given amount of time, say 10 minutes before you go back in to comfort her.
It will stop. It might not be easy, but I bet you can teach her to go back to sleep in a few weeks. My boy is now 21 months and sleeps from 7pm to 7:30 am. It really just happened a while back. He still sometimes wakes up at 5 or 6. We just go in and say, "lay down " or " go back to sleep" and he does!

Good luck. You'll be happy you did it.

One caveat-- this worked when he was down to one afternoon nap. He naps from 12:30 to 2:00. We did have to phase out the am nap and move the afternoon one way forward, by almost 2 hours.

Hi P.,

In some ways you've got it good: Your child has two textbook naps, goes to bed at a great time, and gets 10.5 hours of sleep at night. I have a 2 year old we has always gotten up early, usually 6-6:30 but sometimes earlier. I have also been unable to change his early to rise habit, like some other moms who have written. The best my husband and I have been able to do is to try our best to go to bed earlier so we get eight hours of sleep and sometimes take turns getting up early.

Other advice I have been given is to not go in and see if he goes back to sleep (wait 20 minutes?). At least your child is close to a toddler. The most helpful things we have done at this stage is to wear him out with walking and playing in the afternoon and make sure he gets plenty of calories and a full dinner to carry him through.

Good luck!

Barbara

Well, I guess try cutting down to 1 nap in the afternoon. I did this with my kids when they were 8 months old. So, you can try it and see if it works for you.

Wow - amazing - your 11 month old has the identical sleep schedule to mine, except that my son manages to sleep until 6 or sometimes even 6:30. He went through a phase like you're describing though. We tried pushing his morning nap back later (to closer to 10) and, at the same time, taking longer to respond to him in the morning if he woke up too early. He eventually got over it and stopped doing it. I think pushing back the morning nap helped...

I posted about this not too long ago. :) My 10 month old twinkies 6 days out of the week will NOT sleep past 5/5:30. I have tried putting them to sleep later (8), bed earlier(7 is the earliest I can go), cutting naps shorter, skip naps (although sometimes they just do that on their own) and pushing naps out specifically AM but then they are REALLY cranky and still won't sleep, letting them cry (my son can go a LONG time), etc etc. A few people mentioned that they could just be early risers...ya hoo. Today they slept till 6 or at least weren't screaming in their room till 6 so I got an extra hour of sleep. It was splendid! Wish I had the secret answer!
