I have always bought the enfimal gentelease brand formula for my 5 mos old daughter. I am unable to afford it any more and have found that sam club sells a generic formula for half the price for twice as much. Has any one found anything wrong with the generic. I want to buy whats best for her but if im just paying for a label, Id rather the money go to something else,,,like diapers.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice! She took to the formula ok as far as her stomach but strangly though she has been waking up in the middle of the night(around 2pm) and she has been sleeping through for months now with no late night hunger cries. I wonder if there is something less filling with the generic. Well she will start solids soon so that will help i suppose. Thanks again!

I have never had a problem. In fact one time I stopped and compared labels they were made exactly the same way and when I asked the pedi about it she said that 9 times out of 10 most are made at the same place but the different labels are put on. When my daughter was an infant she used enfamil, similac, and carnation back and forth whichever I had a coupon for or was on sale without any problems. I think companies push the stick with one so that they rope you in. Just my thoughts.

HI K.,
I nurse, but when I wasn't able to in the beginning, my daughter definitely preferred one formula over another. If you look the company up on line or call the number on the can, they usually send out hefty coupons. We got a ton of $5 coupons, which is about the difference between formulas. We had to keep switching formulas because she either hated it or it would really upset her stomach. The same happens with diapers. My daughter is almost 11 months and I have not paid full price for diapers yet. And a shopping tip...make sure to look at the full price label. I found that the larger packs cost the same perunit as the smaller packs and weren't a deal, but the middle size packs was cheaper per unit where I shop.

The government regulates what goes into the formula so the generic ones are just as good as the name brand ones. Some babies prefer certain kinds over others though, so you may go through a trial and error period when switching formulas.

Also, as for generic diapers, I have found that the Target brand diapers work well - definitely better than Huggies, which always tend to leak!

I bought only the brand name formula with my first child, then miraculously found the store brands with my second. When I asked my pediatrician about it back home, she told me that she preferred they take he Enfamil for the first 6 weeks and after that the store brands were just fine. I did some research on my own after that and found that many of the store brands are exactly the same formula just labeled for the store where they are sold. I gave my younger two (one is still on formula) the store brand after 6 weeks and until about 1 year. Hope that helps. In addition, We switch from milk based to soy whenever they have any congestion or runny noses, etc. I have been lucky that they are not stomach sensitive. we switch back and forth between brands and soy/ milk based. FYI Watch wal mart (If they have those here) I find great deals on formula there.

the formula has the same nutrients in it but you need to be careful some babies just can't tolerate different formulas I would just buy a small amount of it and try it if everything is alright then buy the generic....if you are having finacial problem try and apply for wic they will buy you 31 cans of formula a month (concentrated).

Hello K.,

My son is on the Gentelease formula as well, and actually we do use the generic brand of it execpt we buy it from walmart, and it's the same size can as the enfimal , and also when you compare the ingedents side by side they are exactly the same so i was very comfortably for him going to the gerneric, only because it is exactly the same and it cost $14.88 compared to the 23.98 that the enfimal is. My son as done great on it. I hope that this helps
good luck

The parents choice brand from walmart to me, seems almost exactly the same as Similac. My little guy seems to actually really like the Parents choice brand too, which I don't mind because of how cheap it is! I think it was 10.43 for a big can of it and almost $24 for Similac. I say it's like similac but I think on the can it says compare to it and enfmail. We didn't do so well with the enfamil though and he still did ok with the PC.

As far as diapers go, I actually didn't like the NB huggies or pampers (Huggies leaked unless I pulled out the leg guard every time I changed him and pampers stuck to his "boy parts"!) White cloud aren't actually all that bad!

There's nothing wrong with the generic brand formula. Just test it out first because it could hurt their stomach (not because it's generic just because switching formulas can do that).

When my 3 were abbies we bought the genertic formula. Its regulated by the FDA just like the name brand formula so there is no problem with it. Before you buy a lot of it try a little bit to see if your baby likes it.
