Sounds like someone in another country used your credit card number. No matter that they credited it back. It may just be the beginning of them using your card. Call the credit card company right away and put a stop on that card and have them issue you another number. Are you sure of your other charges?

Sometimes when unsavory people get ahold of credit cards that don't belong to them, they use them to purchase something for a small amount to see if it will fly. Banks actually tend to flag these because they have found that it's the beginning of fraudulent use of cards. It happened to us one time. They charged a dollar at a convenience store. The bank actually called us about it, and we cancelled the card and got a new one sent to us.

Good luck!

Perhaps fraudulant activity. Our credit card company tells us that oftentimes when criminals have stolen credit card info, they do a test-run of a small amount first to see if the card works.

Is this for a regular bank account, or one that also has a debit card attached to it?

Typically when you have a debit and then a credit for small amounts, it means your account is being "tested"..... for example when you set up a paypal account the first time as a business owner, they will charge and then credit you something like $0.50. The "balance" is even, but it assures them that their software is working both ways and they can access your bank.

If you haven't set up any auto-debits or withdrawls, I would have your bank "contest" the charges. That will lead them back to who made the charge.

I would be a bit concerned about someone trying to access your account. But it could also be a pre-auth charge for gas or something.

have you purchased anything online that could have been processed through a foreign bank?

I don't know what it is but I hope the bank has frozen the account for you and has opened a new one. It's a pain but better to be safe!

Glad you figured it out! I usually see those charges when I make an online purchase from a Canadian company.

They usually "fish" with a small amount to see what happens. If you report it or the purchase is questioned/rejected, they won't use your card further. If the purchase goes through, then they will.

My husband had this happen twice with his debit card and both times our bank contacted us immediately about "suspicious charges". Alert the bank (which you already did) and check your account daily for other charges b/c this one went through.
