My son is three and recently my doctor gave me a pescription for Flovent. He has been taking Palmicort for seasonal allergies and has already had an asthma attack this season. I was wondering if anyone else has used this allergy medicine on small children. I am nervous about making the change.

What can I do next?

I am a respiratory therapist and work with children, Flovent is basically the same thing a corticosteriod as Pulmicort. Your doctor might have wanted to increase the strength of the medicine and Flovent has a few more dosage choices than Pulmicort. Also, he might be trying something new since he has been on the other for a while, wanting to see what works better for him. Both drugs are used as a preventative medicine for people with asthma. So the idea is that it will help prevent future attacks because it treats inflammation. Hope this helps, just make sure with both medicines you are rinsing his mouth out, either by drinking something after or swishing and spitting out water. Both medicines can cause thrush of the mouth, so drinking something after taking it can prevent thrush(yeast infection) from occuring.

My son's been on flovent since he was born...he's 18 months old now. The only thing to remember is to wipe your son's mouth out with a damp cloth after administering the flovent. Because flovent is a steroid, it can cause oral thrush if not wiped from the mouth. My son had thrush once and I've had it, it is extremely painful! If you notice any white patches in your son's mouth, you can use gentian violet to get rid of the thrush...it works soo much faster and soo much better than the anti-fungal your pedi will prescribe. You can get gentian violet at any pharm, just ask the pharmacist for it...they keep it behind the counter.

Hi,
My son is on flovent and has been since he was about 6 mos old. It has helped a lot. It has decreased his coughin quite a bit. But we recently decreased the amount he gets per day b/c most of his congestion issues are in his upper sinuses so we are using a combnation of flovent and flonase which apparently are the same medicene just for different parts of the respiratory tract. If you do eer use flonase, just know that it will not spray horizontally soyou have to give it to them while they are standing up. Not much of a problem with an older shild but a bit of one with and infant.

My daughter has been on the abuteral and it never did a thing to help her asthma. Flovent she takes seasonal (usually starting around October- April)depending on the coldness in the air and it works instantly. Plus it's easier to use than 20 minutes on those annoying machines and the kids hate them anyways. She has been on it for 3 years and and she is 5 now. She actually tells me when she needs it because she can feel the difference herself in how she breaths. Good Luck.

J.,

My 5yo and 2yo both have asthma and allergies. Flovent is basically the same medicine that's in Pulmicort, it's just delivered in the inhaler instead of through the nebulizer. It should be no problem to change!

Hi, When we lived in Georgia my son was always wheezing and ended up in the hospital for a closed left lung. His wheezing was horrible. Now, since we moved to a very dry climate, his wheezing turned into coughing. My son is 4 (almost 5) and has been on Xoepenex and Flovent inhalers for almost 2 months and it has stopped all coughing/asthma problems. I am SO thankful for this medicine and change!! For the first year here in Texas, any change in season or colds would send him into horrible coughing spells. Since being on these inhalers, he has gone through two colds with NO problems. I hope this helps.
