Flat Iron Damage, Help!

Hi ladies:

This is for anyone who has done the Brazilian Blowout, and/or has flat-ironed their hair to well, pieces! I have very curly, frizzy hair that I've worn in various styles and lengths. After 12 years of not even a trim, I have deduced that my hair will never be long (like my sisters!). I haven't cut it because as a child I had very short hair and have had so many horrible haircuts that I learned to trust not one person with a scissor!

Anyway, last year I got the Brazilian Blowout. It was my last-ditch attempt to have long hair, at least temporarily. The treatment was all well and good until DD started getting mobile :-). Who has time to straighten hair--even if it's just 10 minutes--with a very, busy toddler!

Now I am left with major flat-iron damage. It's really bad. My hair feels like straw, is frizzy and I feel as unkempt as a shrub in need of a good landscaping.

Can anyone recommend a product that can help severly damaged hair?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I'll try some OTC goop first and then treat myself to a massive conditioning/trim at the salon. No more straightenings for me. I'm not a celeb who can hire someone for "maintenance!"

Can you afford to head to a salon? You probably need a deep conditioning treatment, one better then what you can buy at a store. (Moroccan Oil is awesome) If you can't afford that, I always like to use hot oil treatments (super cheap, too!!) You need a great conditioner. I recommend Nexxus KerapHix Restorative Strengthening Conditioner. It's a bit pricey, but totally worth it.

Brazilian blow outs contain really dangerous chemicals, I would stay far away from them.

I don't have an answer for the hair damage (maybe a deep condition treatment at the salon and a cut to get those extra dry ends off would help) but I just mainly want to say is this: last Spring or Summer I saw a Dr. Oz show, he said the Brazilian blowouts aren't good for our health and many salons won't even do them.

You can actually buy moroccan oil by Organix at Walgreens. There are several products in the line including a leave-in conditioner & it's inexpensive. Obviously it's not quite as high quality as what you would get in a salon, but if time &/or money is tight, it can at least be a stop-gap. Here's the website: http://www.walgreens.com/search/results.jsp?Ntt=moroccan+oil

for a deep conditioner at home .... try mayo or olive oil :) Put on, wrap in plastic wrap, if you have a dryer you can sit under then about 10 minutes is good, if not go with 20 min or so. Wash and it'll help smooth the cuticle.

HOWEVER, your hair is dead, once it's damaged it's damaged and if you use a clarifying shampoo any treatment you put on it will have it right back to the way it was. THE ONLY way to get rid of damaged hair is to cut it off. If it's extensive damage do it a small amount at a time :)

I have no idea what a brazilian blowout is so I can't help ya there LOL

Do you wear your hair up a lot? Wearing it up in a ponytail holder is more damaging than straightening it. It rips and pulls and causes breakage all the way at the top.
Instead of wearing a ponytail holder when I put it up, I would use clips, does not pull or break.
I would get conditioning treatments everyother months and I would say within 6 months there was a noticable difference.

If you dont ever where your hair up, then I have no clue. :) That was my problem anway.

i think you should go to the salon. i also think you should ask your doctor about your hair. it sounds like it is unhealthy and perhaps you need to add a vitiman or some oils to your diet. its odd that after 12 years its not growing. thats alittle too slow even for slow growing hair.

also before flat ironing hair you should put a product on it to protect your hair from too much dammage. like bio silk or chi products.

For me the Pure Brazilian line and/or Morracan Oil are lifesavers (both are from a salon). I have natural curly hair as well and had a BBO that I maintain using these products. Now I can wash, let my hair air dry and I do not look like a freaky clown. The products can be pricey but for me it is worth it.
