Fish Dishes??

My doctors are recommending that I eat more fish... we only eat fish about 2-4 times a year and I should be eating it at least a few times a month. The thing is I'm having troubles finding fish dishes my family likes. They will eat tuna noodle if they have to and like fish sticks sometimes, but that is about it. I just tried a samon dish (with a soy & brown sugar sauce), I like it, but no one else did and I don't like cooking two seperate meal (one for me and one for them). So, I am looking for more dishes to try. Do any of you ladies have fish dishes that your family like that I could try?

I like my salmon broiled with a lemon butter sauce. Once out of the broiler I squeeze lemon juice over it. Family likes this too. I'm so hungry. I'm going to lunch right now.

You could put a piece of tuna or salmon on the grill. Also, salmon burgers are yummy.

I like fish. My doctor also recommended I eat more fish.

I'd recommend getting them into the fish menu's gradually. I love going out for fried fish. I just haven't mastered deep fat frying at home.

I'd recommend you go to allrecipes.com for real good recipes and lot of ideas. Its free. They have a service you pay for, but you don't really need that.

Super easy: I take a simple white fish (usually tilapia, I buy frozen and then thaw immediately before use). Make an aluminum foil packet. Add a little bit of olive oil and lay the fish on top. Put on whatever spices you like. Close the packet and bake for 20 minutes at 350.

For the kids, I put on simple spices, like using pre-mixed italian spices. I like spicier stuff, so I might put on a cajun or jerk spice mix. I also toss cherry tomatoes into the foil packet sometimes for a little flavor. It is so easy, and you can really use any spice mix that you like and you can customize to anyone's taste in the same meal without any extra work.

Also, just in general, white fish are often better liked by people who aren't used to eating fish. Dark fish, like salmon, has a much stronger taste. You'll probably have better success with your family if you start with white fish dishes for now.

All very mild, especially the farm raised versions. The fresher the fish the better the taste - if you have a local fish market get your fish there instead of at a chain grocery.

One of my son's favorite ways to eat talapia is when I dip it in egg wash, coat it in Italian breadcrumbs and gently fry it. I also just sprinkle the fish with salt, onion and garlic powder and sear it in a skillet with olive oil. You can add whatever seasonings your family likes to the fish. Same works form baking fish - your favorite seasoning, a little Pam sprayed in the pan, and pop it into a 350 degree oven until the meat flakes with a fork.

I prepare fish very simply - it is a quick, 30 minute or less, meal for me.

Try the milder fish with your family - salmon is a stronger, oilier fish and takes a bit of getting used to.

I'm going to try the crock pot recipe I found on here tonight. Same as Diane C's, but put in crock on low for 5 hrs.

Don't forget shrimp, crab legs and lobster. :)

But in general, we just get some of the frozen pre-breaded ones (all varieties) and shove 'em in the oven. :)

Oh...and don't forget Tuna salad sandwiches!

Our family favorites are:
talapia cooked in a skillet with olive oil and lemon pepper

talapia or blue hake baked (for 3-4 pieces)
2-3 tbsp. butter/marg.
5 tbsp.worchestersire sauce
2 1/2 tbsp. soy sauce
You can use less or more depending on what you like, but this is what my family likes. I have some juice left at the end of baking that my husband uses to put over mashed potatoes.

My 6 year old loves the tilapia with the lemon pepper.

Although we occasionally like fish sticks, we really like it without batter or breading.
I take some frozen cod or haddock fillets, put it in a glass dish, put a few pats of butter on it, sprinkle a little lemon juice over it, and sprinkle just a little salt and garlic powder on top.
I cover the dish with plastic wrap, and microwave it about 20 min (varies depending how much you're doing) until it's cooked and flakey.
Then everyone gets some fish in a bowl with some of the juice over the top.
My whole family loves it.
It's good on rice or with some veggies on the side.

The baked or grilled fish is healthier, but it's easier to get my son to eat things if they're fried.

Shrimp fried rice, scallop stir fry with Italian seasoning, crawfish etouffee, fish tacos. Frozen catfish that is breaded like fish sticks.

My favorite family recipe is salmon croquettes- kind of like crab cakes. I combine a can of salmon with crackers, zesty breadcrumbs, diced onions, bell peppers, and an egg. Form into patties and then pan fry them.

I agree with starting with white fish to get used to it. I am not fond of fish at all but I do make salmon because my hubby and daughter like it.

I either marinate it in Italian dressing, little olive oil and little lemon juice and grill it OR

Salmon baked in foil... large piece of foil, spray a little pam on the foil, place salmon skin down. In separate bowl, dice tomatoes (you can use canned diced tomatoes, drained), add chopped shallots, garlic, little lemon juice, little oil, Italian seasonings. I don't measure anything, I just know what our family likes so I suit it to their taste.

Put tomato mixture on top of salmon, close the foil into a pouch type packet. This can all be done up to 6 hours before you cook it. If you do this, the flavors sink in better too... Bake at 400 for about 30 minutes.

I servie it with rice. When I make my rice, I either cook it in tomato juice or I add lipton instant veggie soup mix to the water and then cook rice in it.

I can eat these 2 fish dishes.

Salmon is a strong-tasting fish. Try halibut or cod. You can just saute it in butter, white wine, water, whatever. It helps to throw in some carrots or leeks. Or you can bake it. Top it with lemon or lemon/buttermilk mixture.

Or, you can bread it and either pan fry or bake. This is better than the fish sticks (and allows you to get more fish than breading in them).

Try good canned tuna (Mediterranean tuna packed in olive oil). We saute this with garlic and crushed red peppers and put it on pasta. It's really yummy.

Oh. One more idea. Google "fish en papillote" recipes. This is fish wrapped in parchment paper or foil and cooked. It keeps all the juices in and you can throw in veggies and herbs too. Lots of different possibilities for this. And everyone gets their own little packet to open and eat. Fun!
