Finger Foods/self Feeding

I have a 10 month old son who loves cheerios and puffs, but will not eat anything else (finger foods). On occasion, he will eat some toast, and he has eaten a couple of pieces of banana, and a couple pieces of broccoli, but other that that, finger foods are a no go. I am constantly offering him finger foods to self feed, but he just stares at it (unless its cheerios or puffs). When I try giving him little pieces he clenches his mouth shut. I have tried bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, pears, and more, but he won't try them (even though he LOVES all of those foods). The 2 times he actually ate the broccoli and banana, he took it from me (either my finger or my own spoon) instead of feeding himself. His pincer grasp is great, and he has no problem chewing the cereal. I even sit in front of him and eat little pieces of food myself, but that doesn't seem to work. He also does not like to eat the chunky baby food either, but a very thick puree is OK. Please let me know if you have experienced something similar, or if you have any tips and tricks to get him to start eating pieces of food. Other than finger foods, my son is a great eater! He LOVES vegetables and have yet to find one that he doesn't like. As for fruits, he isn't a big fan, but is getting better. He really LOVES pears and bananas though, and as for the other fruits, as long as I sprinkle cinnamon into the puree, he will gobble it up. Oh, and my son has a possible allergy to milk, so we have to avoid cheese and other dairy finger foods. Thanks for your input!

just keep offering it! & honestly, if you just eliminate the pureed food....he'll get hungry enough to eat for you. & no, that's not mean! As long as you know he's capable of transitioning to the next level.....

Let him self feed with a spoon and gradually let the food get chunkier so he gets used to the textures. He sounds developmentally on track, so don't worry. he is doing fine, just keep offering and eventually he will gobble it up.

Since he's a good eater except for finger foods I wouldn't be concerned about them. Just keep offering finger foods and he'll eventually learn that they're fun too. Definitely do not try to make him by putting them in/near his mouth. This could turn into a battle that you don't want. Relax and let him go at his own pace.

If I remember correctly this was about the time my daughter stopped eating all the good foods i *thought* she loved. I think it's the same time period they go through a growth spurt and aren't as hungry and are also testing foods out. I started buying the Gerber puffs for her stage.. they have different flavors and i believe one is an apple cinnamon puff. Don't do anything different just keep offering it to him. The pediatrician always told me (my 8 yr old has ALWAYS been a finicky eater) not to get too upset when they don't eat and not to force them.

My 2 yr old loved tomatoes.. so we would buy cherry tomatoes and cut them up in quarters or smaller.

Sounds like it's time to stop the pureed food and move to just chunky or finger foods, and back off on feeding him yourself. Give him a spoon so he can learn to hold it and practice getting it to his mouth. He will learn to pick up and eat on his own if you let him, and if you offer him foods consistently he will eventually eat them. He's 10 months, he has time!
