I have a 2 year old, who has been running a fever for 5 days now. I took him to the doctor, they check him and he checks out fine. The doctor suggest doing what i was already doing giving him motrin. Are there any moms out there that have experienced this same occurance? How can i make this fever stay gone without giving my child motrin every 8 hours? Keep in mind the fever is staying below 101, its between 98.7 and 100.3. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your comments. As of today the fever is gone. He never really got sick, so i am assuming it was a cold trying to come but his little body faught it off. I did check to see if any teeth were coming in it looks like he got all of them even his molars. But everyone gave great advise. Thanks again

I would suggest switching doctors. If your child has had a fever for 5 days, that is a sign of infection. Being that it has been so long, most pediatricians would have prescribed an antibiotic.
If the temp. is not 101 or higher, may I suggest that you not panick. Try to go a whole day w/o giving him any motrin. He should be okay. I would suggest taking your baby in when he has a temp.

No other symptoms but the fever? Your son's not fussy or uncomfortable? There is a reason your body has a fever -- it is fighting something. Often, unless the child is miserable, it's good to let him have a fever so his body can fight whatever it's fighting. I'd keep in contact with the doctor too. Five days is a really long time! Also, very important -- be sure to keep him well hydrated.

A fever is considered a fever over 100.5F.
98.7F is 'normal'. I was always told to treat the symptoms and not the numbers. Good luck!!

Some advise not to even treat a lowgrade fever because it's good in killing or warding off infection.

My kids don't have a normal body temp of higher then 98.6 I have had that problem with my kids and what happened was that I had taken them to early before other symptoms showed. So of course the doctor said nothing is wrong....need I say days later I take them back it's sinus infection or ear infection. If you have before taken your childs temp and it's been 98.6 then you know that your child doesn't run a higher then what is considered normal temp. I also noticed my kids ran higher temps when getting teeth in even now, the big molars at their ages and they have no desire for food. I just had my 5 yr old get some immuns and they told me since he got 5 shots to rotate tylenol and motrin aver 4 hours. Ex; mortin at 1pm then tylenol at 5pm then mortin again at9pm...I have done it before for ear infections as well. If you don't have to go to the same doctor I'd call them and see if someone else was available or if you can go to another doctor all together different office you may want to consider that. My doctors wouldn't listen to me years back about my oldest and let him have ear tubes we had lots of ear infections well, 2 yrs special ed prek many speech therapist and he's doing fine but that doctor and me staying with her too long was not good for my son. Doctor's are human and sometimes makes errors. I'm just saying if this doesn't feel right to you, you are your childs only advocate. I hope your little one feels better soon or gets some help with this situation, blessings to you.

My grandson had some type of viral infection and or teething (2 yr molars)is what the doc told me when he ran a low grade fever that lasted for 7 days so I alternated motrin, tylenol, and witch hazel.

Hi I am thinking it might be 2 year molars. Sometimes they give our little ones a hard time. I just went through that. They didn't even pop the surface yet for my two year old which means we will go through it again. Hang in there and you might want to give something cold to ease the pain. Hope this helps I am a mother of three so I am definetly more relaxed with my third. Good luck!!!

Hi L.,

Sometimes can be a just a virus, it had happened to our kids, just fever, ears are fine, etc. It has never lasted more than 5 to six days though. If it does then take your baby back to the peds. Something the drs have recomended to us and we do when the fever wont go away with only motrin, is alternate with Tylenol, every 4 hours. You give a dose of Motrin and after 4 hrs one of tylenol, 4 hrs later another of Motrin and so on. That always work for them in those cases. Also, use cold compreses on his forhead and tummy to help cool off.

I hope this helps, best of luck and call out if youneed us!
