Favorite Sippy Cups
My 12 month old is perfecting the use a sippy cup, so I need to buy more. I'm looking for recommendations of favorite sippy cup brands to buy, or those to stay away from. Do I need an insulated one?

I have used the Playtex Insulated cups for years. First with my oldest son and now with my younger one. They go in the dishwasher and don't usually leak. They are sold at the grocery store and places like WalMart and Target. I have some that are insulated and some that are not. With milk I prefer the insulated because it stays cold longer. It is just a personal preference. Good luck!

I prefer the sippy cups made by the First Years company, They are insulated and they don't have the valves that you have to take in and out lke most of the other brands do, they are for ages 9 mo. and up. they are wonderful, if you hava a boy, they have them with the cars characters on them, mickey mouse, sesame street, and for girls they have dora, disney princess just to name a few. they also don't leak the way most others do. for on the go, the greber grad. take and toss are good too, but they tend to leak a little bit

My son is almost 2, and we currently use the playtex insulated cups. They have worked out great. I only use those for water and juice. From the time he started whole milk, I have used the Nuby straw cups for milk. It may take awhile to perfect the suction needed to get the liquid up the straw, but he loves those cups. The straws are annoying to clean, but I would recommend them!

My favorite ones are the ones by The First Years. They have NO extra insert so easier to clean. And I found the insulated ones (year round) are best for two reasons. One, they keep drinks cooler longer. Two, kids don't complain as much about their hands being cold and the cups don't sweat. So no matter which brand you get, do get the insulated ones. The First Years that have NO insert will tend to drip a bit more than the others if they fall over, but this is why you have to monitor kids and not let them just wander around with them. It's really best to use them for travel or when you're out and have them use an open cup at home. At the very least, use open cups for all three meals and sippies at their morning and afternoon snack times. Open cups leave them forced to stay at the table to drink. If you do get the sippies with the inserts, be sure to take the inserts out when you wash them and just put them in the silverware baskets with the forks and spoons. I know this sounds like common sense to take them out to wash them, but you wouldn't believe how many people I've come across who did not and was confused why the insert collected icky stuff on them on the inside.

I second the response from Amber.
I didn't want to spend the money on sippy cups, so I bought my daughter the kind that are "throw aways" (Take n Toss, I believe is the brand name). We don't throw away, we reuse, and these cups work just fine! My daughter has been using them for a long while now, but I think we are ready to move on to a cup with a straw...she just mastered a straw!
Good luck!

I worked backwards before I found my favorite. I've got a 2.5 yr. old and a 13 month old. I've also settled on the Playtex cups. I really liked the "coolster" cup for my toddler, b/c it looks like Daddy's coffee cups and it is better for their teeth, b/c there is no "nub" to chew on. When my toddler was a baby, I tried Nuby and Gerber cups. My 13 month old uses the playtex insulated cups. I get the insulated ones more for my sake than his. The insulated ones don't sweat in the hot weather, so my diaper bag and furniture stay dry. They are heavier, but not too heavy for him. Also, the valves in ALL styles of the Playtex cups are interchangeable and replaceable. The only negative I found is that the coolster lids are very tight to open. I usually have to use a rubber jar opener, but on the bright side, my toddler can't open them on his own either!

something to think about, the kind with the straw are good for building the muscles in the mouth that help you make certain sounds. Might be something to keep in mind for down the road a ways. Plus I never had trouble with them leaking, some straws were a little hard to clean but i can't remember which right now.
Also, you don't necessarily need a sippy cup, you could go straight to a plastic cup-cup with an open top. That would prevent your little one from running around with juice etc all day. That was something i never thought about as a first time mom.
I'll also just thow out there that the insulated ones can be heavy for little hands.
good question though, i hope you get some more responses from mom's still in that stage, I just got rid of our last one.
