Fact or Fiction?

I am now 6 wks pregnant and have never been so sick and fatigued in my life. I have 2 sons and was never this sick or fatigued while pregnant with them. My mom and all other female family members that have had both boys and girls said that I'm having a girl because they were as sick as this while they were carrying girls and not nearly as sick, if sick at all, while carrying boys. Is it true that the sicker you are, the more likely you are to have a girl? It could be the extra estrogen my body is producing that is going to the girl to help make her? Maybe?

What can I do next?

I only have a boy and I felt awful the first trimester. Round the clock morning sickness and all I could do was sleep. If this is true and I get pregant with a girl next, I am in big trouble.

It's fiction. There are many wivestales out there. I was sick longer with my son than I was with my daughter(5 months instead of 3). My best friend has 3 kids 2 boys and 1 girl and all 3 of her pregnancies were idential, she threw up all 9 months. It's fun to look at symptoms and compare, but it's all just guessing. Both my kids had the same heart rate too so that's a myth as well. Hope you have a happy, heathly pregnancy and enjoy trying to figure out the gender - that's the fun part. :)

Most the other posts say fiction, so it must be an old wives tale. I was definitely sicker with my girls, but my last pregnancy was not only a girl, but I was also almost 40. I thought I would have to be on the couch for 9 months!

I got "preggo pops" from a store to suck on to cut the nausea. I also started taking ginger supplements. That helped a lot! I've also heard ginger soda can help. I would definitely ask your doctor first, but there's also an anti-nausea band used mostly for sea sickness, that I've heard women have had help, also. Make sure you are nibbling, even if you don't feel like it. I carried saltine crackers with me so that I didn't get hungry since that made it worse.
Congratulations and good luck!

All babies actually start out as girls. Sex differentiation doesn't happen until apx week 8 of gestation.

Even at week 8 differentiation is JUST beginning to occur, and it actually takes several more weeks for the sex to actually hold true. If anything goes "wrong" with sex differentiation at any time (typically prior to week 15) the "default" reverts... and the baby is sexed as a girl. So, while rare, one does find a number of women walking around who would actually test as xY rather than xx, because they reverted to the default/ manufacturer setting. But during weeks 6-8 babies actually have both sets of pre-gonads. One set degenerates over time.

So at 6 weeks, all of our babies have the chromosomes for sex, but half of them aren't actually the "right" sex yet.

So I would say fiction.

Just to be more of a Debbie Downer... our bodies produce extra testosterone (1/2 the time), but not extra estrogen in the sexing process.

I know. Feel free to kick me.

I don't think that's true at all. I had a boy, and was sick for 4 months! I don't think the level of sickness you experience has anything to do with the sex of your child. Everyone's body is different and responds differently to each pregnancy. You very well could have 2 of the same sex and have completely different reactions to each pregnancy. Feel better soon!

I do not know truth or fiction...but, I know I had 3 boys, and one girl....she was baby #3......it was almost like I "did it" rolled over and got morning sickness..that lasted forever with my daughter.
Nothing at all like that with my boys....I mean not at all, and they all told me I was having a girl, and I did.

Fiction. My first was a girl and I was never sick, a little tired but never fatigued. Was able to get up at 5:30 am and go to work everyday. Everyone thought I was having a boy but I asssured them it was a girl. My SIL on the other hand had a boy and she was so sick she was almost hospitalized.

Yeah that's not true. It's just that all pregnancies are different and your body will just react different with each one. For me I have two girls, with my first I has sick but not that bad....only puked about 4 or 5 times total. With my second girl I puked everyday for 6 weeks straight! I thought for sure I was having a boy just because the pregnancies were so different but nope. Then my SIL had a boy first and was so sick for the whole pregnancy. She is now about 7 months pregnant again but this time with a girl and she said she was only a little sick for about a month and only puked for about 2 weeks, which is way better than her first. So yes you could be having a girl but how sick you are doesn't have anything to do with it.

LOL Totally an old wives tale! You can get a completely different group of women that will tell you the same thing but for a boy. There are so many out there you just can't keep up. If you do have a girl, it'll be completely coincidental. I had a great pregnancy with my first, a boy. I had an ill pregnancy with my second, a boy. I had a horribly ill pregnancy with my triplets, two boys and a girl.

My mother gave birth to 2 boys and 2 girls. All different pregnancies.

My grandmother had one girl. She didn't even know she was pregnant until she was about 6 months along!

There is no rhyme nor reason to why some women and each pregnancy varies so much. You will find the older you are the harder or more ill you can get, but that's not set in stone either.

Just remember, if you do have a girl, don't allow your family and friends to convince you it was because you were ill. Not a thing to do with it!

not true at all. I was not sick with my first pregnancy (a girl) and have been sick as a dog throughout my current pregnancy (a boy). My doctor tried to tell me at week 12 that it was a boy because I was so sick and that women get more sick with the hormones from boys, I think it is rubbish. My best friend who has 2 daughters and a boy was not sick through any of her pregnancies. I think it's just our bodies reacting differently to the hormones, etc.

I agree, the amount of sickness is not related to the gender. My friend was miserable through both pregnancies. She couldn't even brush her teeth without gagging and she had a girl first and then a boy. I was not that sick and I had a girl. I think it's one of those things science hasn't figured out yet!

No, it is not true (at least not with me). My first child was a boy & I had to be put on anti nausia medication because I couldn't keep anything down.
My second child was a girl & I wan't very sick with her. My third child was a boy & I wasn't very sick with him. With my 2nd & 3rd I threw up maybe once a day & was great after that.

God bless!

Sex has nothing to do with your morning sickness. It's just something that happens and really has no rhyme or reason to it.

Couldn't say for sure but, I've had 3 kids...girl, girl, boy. Definitely sickest for my first 2 (girls), hardly at all with the last (boy). Coincidence? I will say tho, that my morning sickness was less and less with each subsequent pregnancy.

It's an old wives tale, but if it traditionally happens in your family then maybe you are having a girl. I have two girls and a boy. All three pregnancies were basically the same and I NEVER got sick with any of them.

It's fun to read these responses. I'm pregnant again and much sicker/more tired than the first time (first was a boy) and every says it's a girl because of it! :) Might be an old wivestale... we'll see!

With #4, who happens to be a boy, I was the sickest. I was literally sick 24/7 from week 6 until week 13. I never puked, but felt like I was going to. Add in the daily headaches and it was NOT fun. LOL
With #1 I wasn't sick at all. #2 & 3 I was sick, but not nearly to the point with the boy. I had a prescription from the drs, took vitamin b6. They helped a little but NOTHING got rid of it completely.
So, I think it honestly doesn't matter if you're having a boy or girl.
I will say I was 18 w/#1, 26 with #2, 30 with #3 and 33 with #4. The whole pregnancy was harder on me with him.

I have 2 boys..no morning sickness and although I was tired..it was managable. I am now pregnant with my third and it is a GIRL!! I was SO sick for for first 3 months and was SO tired that I thought that there was something seriously wrong with me. Not sure if there is anything proven about girls making you sicker, but that was my experience. Good luck and I am sending pink vibes your way.

Sorry this post is late.
That is so funny to hear this. When I was pregnant with my son Iwas sick for afull 4 months. It has nothing to do with the sex of the child . Just the wat your body is reacting to the amount of hormones from tyour pregnancy.

Defintely fiction! I have a son and am currently 35 weeks pregnant with my second son and both pregnancies I was super sick. I actually lost weight in the first trimester because I was so sick. Each pregnancy is different so you really can't go by the "I wasn't sick last time" logic. So, I'm sorry to say (if you're hoping for a girl) that it's an old wives tale. When I got pregnant for the second time I even did one of those gender prediction things (just for fun) and it said girl. And it actually said girl for my first son too (and he is definitely all boy, LOL). So, if you're hoping for a girl this time keep your fingers crossed, that's about all you can do. Good luck with your pregnancy! :)

The nausea is related to the hormones and are a good sign that the pregnancy is progressing. I don't think that sick with girls, not with boys is really valid. I have a daughter and I had no morning sickness at all.

BUT - I think that the fact that this pregnancy is so different for you that anything is possible.

Everyone is different, but I was pregnant with 3 girls and with each of them I was sick for months. Not really morning sickness just nauseated 24/7. I am pregnant again and haven't been sick but maybe a few weeks, just found out it's a boy! Whichever you are having congrats and good luck:)
