Electronic Cigarettes for Smoking Cesation?

I am looking into purchasing an electronic cigarette for my mother who is trying to quit smoking. She has many medical issues and must quit smoking after 55 years. Has anyone ever used an e-cigarette as a replacement or as an aid to quit? If so, it seems like there are so many different kinds and brands, is one better than another and why? I am a non-smoker so I have no frame of reference for any of this.

What can I do next?

As a non-smoker I, too, have no frame of reference. My sister, however, smoked for about 45 years -- until she had a heart attack. She used Chantix and e-cigarettes and has been very successful for over 5 months now.

I quit cold turkey, but a friend of mine used the e-cigs and has had very good results. She quit a two-pack a day habit six months ago.

My husband just started using the Electronic Cigarettes. He said the more expensive one is better, lasts longer. It comes with a plug in. It is helping him quit.

My girlfriend used it and it worked for her.

My husband has one. They have 3 stages of nicotine - so the smoker can step back gradually. Nicotine is a powerful "drug"...she needs to drink lots of water to help clear out her system...I would strongly suggest "juicing" especially if she has medical issues.

She needs to want to quit in order for anything to work for her.
When my husband quit back in 1999, he went cold turkey...3 years later, he went back to smoking due to a stressful job.

It will be a tough time. She will need to occupy her hands and change her routine so that she can get out of the "habit" of smoking.

GOOD LUCK!

My husband has been using them with some success.

I on the other hand can't do them. They make me choke and gag, no matter what I try or how I do it. It hits the back of my throat and it almost burns (not the best description). I do know a few other people that have had pretty good success with them.

My Brother and SIL both used the ecigarette and were successful and have been clean from cigarettes for almost 6 years after smoking for almost 30.

I was successful. My brand was Encore. To be honest I tried a few different brands before finding the one I liked. Some where too heavy to hold comfortably, some were too short (I smoked 100's) some where not an appealing taste, some were just too expensive to use.

She has to be involved with the selection because she knows what "feels right" and that has A LOT to do with it.

In addition she should ALWAYS start with the highest amt of niccotine offered and then taper down to the lowest over time. The first few days/week she should have a few hits of a reg smoke then try to finish the craving with the ecig. If after about 10 hits of the ecig finish the reg cig if the craving is not satisfied, it's an adjustment. It works best if it is introduced slowly vs BAM! NO more cigs.

My sis tried them - loved for a while - went back to reg cigs. I have had a reg cig here and there depending on the moment and had no issues going back to the ecig. It is a personal thing though, she does have to WANT to quit not just HAVE to. If she HAS to she will not be successful there has to be a want too.

My question would be, after going off tobacco cigs for the ecig--how long did it take people to get off the ecig? Or are they still on it?

Ecigs are also not good for you, based on what is inside the ecig/what is used to "power" the ecig.

While for many it is probably a wonderful way to help them kick the habit, they haven't really kicked the habit if they're still smoking ecigs. Kicking the habit means no cigarettes at all, regular, natural, or manmade.

I quit over a year ago after switching to an ecig. I have no desire to smoke "analogs" (tobacco cigs) as they call them. In fact, I can't stand the smell of an analog now.
Luckily, we had a local shop that let you try the ecig out free of charge. I would suggest that for her, so that she find what she likes best. I personally liked the non-disposable kind. You just buy parts as they wear out, and they charge with a wall adapter or USB cable. Still much, much cheaper than cigs.
Hope this helps.

Hi, C.:

Don't waste your money.
Find out where places are that teach people
how to stop smoking.
When you find a place, offer to help her get there
or other options available.
Good luck.
