Early Labor, with Genetic Testing???

I am 21 weeks pregnant and we have already been told that our unborn child doesn't have a chance of surviving. The baby never developed kidneys, which means no amniotic fluid, which also means that the baby is unable to develop it's lungs properly. Also, with all the stress of this the baby's heart has started failing and is very irregular. They want to a genetic testing to see if future births will end the same or if it was just a chromosome issue. We have accepted what has happened and decided to carry to term and let the baby decide when it is time to come. My question is does anyone know the likelihood of me going into labor after they do the genetic testing (which is similar to an amnio).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We had our appointment today. I found out that there is 1 percent chance of going into labor. Unless you have had problems with preterm pregnancies before then it is a higher chance. We wont have the results of the genetic testing for about 2 weeks. Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers

Hi R.,
I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I had CVS (chorionic villi sampling) which has higher risk since it is done earlier than amnio. Everything was fine. There is some likelihood, in my mind, not professionally, since your baby has genetic issues, however, that it may abort after the procedure. We did CVS because of some very high risk factors due to my age and because I had a threatened miscarriage, the stress was eating away at me and I was worried that not knowing was causing more harm than good as I simply could not calm down.

I guess the question you need to ask yourself is whether you need to know, how you would proceed if there was a problem again, that sort of thing. I personally needed to know if the baby was ok, or not, so that I could proceed from there. Once you know, there are obviously two choices, both of which are difficult but at least you can make a decision just as you have done. When I look at what you've said, I think you've decided it doesn't matter, you are going to carry the baby. One question I have too, that you may want to ask your doctors, is can't they test afterwards, ie. the placenta?

Whatever you decide, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I think in earlier pregnancy, the odds of having an amnio trigger a miscarriage (which is essentially because the woman goes into labor), is about 1 in a 100, or 1%, so your odds would probably be about the same or possibly a little lower since it's later. This says that ACOG says the risk is about 1 in 300-500 http://www.babycenter.com/0_amniocentesis_327.bc?page=2#a.... (Even though technically it's considered "miscarriage" in the article, I believe the reason why it's considered that is because I believe it breaks the water before the baby is old enough to survive, and any loss before 20 wks is technically called a miscarriage.)

Our first daughter died shortly after she was born at 23+2 wks. It is hell. I'm so sorry you are going through this and you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't have any answers for you, but wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I lost a baby in February after finding out at my 20 week ultrasound my baby would not survive. It was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I pray that time will heal you as it did for me. But there is still not a day that goes by that I don't think of my lost baby! If you ever have any questions, need support with the healing, etc please don't hesitate to contact me.

Oh, R., my heart is breaking for you. I don't really know what will happen with the genetic testing as far as labor is concerned. My guess would be that it would be a possibility. The doctor would probably be better able to tell you the odds. God bless you.

I am so sorry for what you and your family are going through. Of course, I'm not an expert but I've had two amnio's and one CVS and I was always told that those procedures had a very minimal chance of miscarriage but was never told anything about early labor. So, again, not a professional opinion but just something I've never heard about or read about happening.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
