Hi, Moms!

I am a stay-at-home mom with a boy who will be two-years-old this August, and I am trying to find an early "preschool" program to put him in somewhere near our home (Deerfield). He is getting pretty anxious about separation lately, and I feel that it would be good for him to learn to be away from me a couple of hours a day two or three days per week.

I have noticed the Deerfield Community Nursery School as well as Christian Beginnings, and both look great but I cannot figure out how much they cost. We would prefer to keep it as reasonable as we can, but are willing to spend a little more if the school is worth it.

My husband and I are an inter-faith marriage (Jewish and Catholic), so we are open to schools of different religious denominations as well. We just want to send our son to something solid, fun, and nurturing. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi, We love BJE (Board of Jewish Education) Preschool. We attend the one in Long Grove, but they also have one in Deerfield. They have a great separation program, and are very understanding that it may take more or less time to separate depending on the child. They are very nurturing and it is a play based program. My children have learned all the necessary skills needed for Kindergarten and then some. they are very open to visitors, you should call and ask if you can come to visit!!

I'm in Highland Park and we love Highland Park Community Nursery and Preschool. It's off of Central and Green Bay Rd.

Before preschool, my daughter attended Mommy Morning's Away at the Park District of Highland Park at West Ridge Center. That was a 3 hour class that she attended 1 day a week. A lunch is packed, and this is for ages 2 - 3. This was a great program to get my daughter used to being in a school setting with other children. The teachers are fantastic (Miss Linda and Miss Cheryl). Check the Park District of HP Catalog. They even run a summer session.

My oldest daughter went to Christian Beginnings in Deerfield when she was 2. She went two mornings a week from 9:00 - 11:15. We had a good experience there and the two year old teacher (Mrs. Olsen) is wonderful. I'd suggest calling and talking to the administrative director. They will schedule a time to let you go visit and explain the monthly fees.

I can't speak to their programs for older children. We've since moved both our kids to full-day programs at the Deerfield Montessori.

Both of my children attend/attended Deerfield Community Nursery School (I have a 2 1/2 year old currently there and a 6 year old who attended for three years before entering kindergarten). Since the first day my oldest started as a 2 year old, I knew I had made the right choice in preschool. The staff are not only extremely experienced, but also CARING and really attentive to the needs of each individual child. They deal with separation issues all the time, and work with each family individually to find out what is right for them. The school is play-based, and through play they learn so many skills that will prepare them for kindergarten and life -- but the kids just see it as having fun. The school has a parent-run board, so there are many ways to get involved and help shape the education and experience your child is getting. I have found it extremely rewarding to know that I am making a difference in my child's (and many other's) education. The word "community" is in the name of the school, and it really is a comunity your family can become part of.

We are an interfatih family as well, and there are people of many different relgions at DCNS. We do NOT have a relgious affiliation.

DCNS has been a wonderful place not only for my children but for myself and my husband as well. In this short response I can't tell you about all the wonderful things the school has done for my children. Please feel free to email me if you would like to chat. For more information about the school, our classes and tuition, you can contact our director, Mindi Schryer at the school. The phone number is ###-###-####. She is wonderful and would be happy to show you the school and let you see some classses in action.
