The only time my son who had tubes was prescribed ear drops was when he got an ear infection while he had the tubes in. My son got ear infections when he got water in his ears. I had ear plugs custom made for my son because the mouldable wax plugs always fell out when swimming, even with the neoprene headband. Is he only in pain when you put the drops in, or all the time? If it is just when you are using the drops ask the doctor, or another doctor if you need to keep using the drops.

Welcome to mamapedia!

You need to find an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) Doctor that will work with you to get to the bottom of why your son's ear hurts.

Why is a doctor having you put drops in his ear?
I'm sorry your son's ear hurts so much that he screams. find out WHAT and WHY they are having you put drops in his ears if there is no infection.

Your son is old enough to tell you what hurts - HOW it hurts - so talk with him.

I'm not a doctor and even if I was - I wouldn't diagnose your son over the internet. PLEASE find an ENT who will work with you and get to the bottom of your son's ear pain.

Good luck!

Are the ear drops cold? If they are, it really hurts. I always warmed the bottle by rubbing it between my palms for a while before putting the eardrops my kids' ears.

What kind of doctors are you taking him to? Are they ENT doctors? Make sure that they are. Why does his have ear drops? I don't understand why his ears are fine, yet he has eardrops... you don't put eardrops in ears unless there is a reason for it.

Doris Day is correct. Make sure the ear drops are body temperature. I used to hold them in my hand for about 15 or 20 minutes, before using them on our daughter.

But I do also think I would get another opinion..

Ear pain is excruciating.

It sounds similar to what my old boss's daughter went through with hers. As the tubes started to work their way out, they got stuck and perforated the ear canal. She ended up having to have a corrective surgery to have the tubes removed. I hope this isn't the case with your son but it sounds like that may be the case.
He definitely needs to see an ENT asap. And probably not the same one that did the surgery for the tubes originally.

Did you go to an ENT? Obviously, there is something wrong. Get a second opinion from a different Ear, Nose and Throat doc. Don't stop. Pain is the body trying to tell you something.

Did you take him to an ENT? Then they know what they're talking about. I think the doc might want to change the prescription. I am allergic to Cipro and several ear drops have Cipro in them. I have to be very careful what drops I use.

He may not like the feeling of the drops inside and thinks it hurts when it is only the drops moving around.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying. Does his ear hurt all the time, or only when you use the drops?
If it's only when you are using the drops - Why are you putting drops in if there is no infection? You only need to put drops in if there is yellow goop coming out of his ear demonstrating an infection - so if you've been to 3 doctors and there is no infection, then no need to use any drops.

As for them not coming out after 2 years - the ENT told us that if ear tubes stay in longer than 3 years, sometimes the hole in the ear doesn't heal properly after that. So if they didn't come out on their own by 3 years after, he would take them out. So, the fact that they haven't come out yet, at 2 years after, isn't a big deal by itself.

(How in the world do you capitalize every word? Lol)

Anyway, I think if the drops are causing pain, I would probably discontinue use until I had him looked at by a doctor.
Good luck!

My son went thru two sets before finally having to have the second set removed. We were only given ear drops when he had an infection - does your son have an infection? I agree with the other posters - that the drops need to be "warmed up" i guess. I would rub them between my hands for 30 seconds and my son always complained it hurt when we put drops in...but only when putting drops in. If the pain is all the time - you definately need another opinion and by the ENT doctor cause something is going on.
