Hello all I have a quick question. I am 15 weeks pregnant and my roots are showing big time. I've read a lot of different things online about dying your hair while pregnant, some says no some says it doesn't matter. So I thought I would put it out to you guys. So just wondering if anyone has already done this and if it had any affects on the baby. Any opinions are welcome.

I dyed my hair while pregnant and my 2 year old is perfect. I have heard that it is the smell effecting the mother, not the chemicals that can be bad. It just makes the mother queasy. If you are still worried, you can call and see if a salon/hairdresser carries a vegetable based dye or low odor dye.

My OB said that after the first trimester, it was totally safe in a well ventilated area. I did it with no effects.

I asked my stylist this and she said that they won't do it because the hormones from pregnancy can mess with the dyes big time and can leave you with a color that you had no intention of getting.

You can buy organic hair dyes online and maybe in health food stores, that would be a little less toxic too, if that's your worry.

I colored my hair when I was pregnant and the color does not take or it is not the desired color. I do not believe it affected either one of my children but be prepared for a color that is not indicated on the box.

Well my sister, who works in the hair field, says it wont hurt the baby, but sometimes (due ot our hormones) the color doesn't take. I am currently 24 weeks along. I tried to color mine in my first trimester and I dont think it worked. I just redid my roots a couple of weeks ago with success. I don't know if you do yours at home or a salon. But I wouldn't invest too much money in it in case it doesn't work.
Good luck and God Bless <>< J.

Hi K...

I see you have a lot of answers! Good!
When I was pregnant, I remember that my doctor told me that there was nothing to prove that dying hair while pregnant had any negative effect on the baby/fetus; however, she told me that to be on the safe side it was better not to do it...a baby is to sensitive and precious to take the risk. So, it is your call..I understand you want to look pretty, though!
Also, remember that the first trimester is the most important, and any harmful (chemicals, sprays, paint..etc)thing will have an effect on the baby as well as any good and healthy thing you do..

Take care and ask to your doctor, he/she knows you better and your health condition..

It's totally fine nowadays. It was questionable 30 years ago because of the harsher chemicals they used but it's safe today. The only thing they caution against is that due to hormones, the color may not stick or be the shade you are used to.

I don't know where you live, but I just went to the Aveda institute in Indianapolis and couldn't get a color appointment for several weeks on a saturday. They mixed up an Aveda personal blend shampoo and conditioner that has done wonders. It gives me just enough tint that my hair looks natural without the roots.

Some doctors say no, some say it's ok, some say to avoid dye with a certain chemical in it. I have 8 kids, I dyed my hair while I was pregnant with 7 of them...by the 8th I was to tired to care. They all came out with one head, 2 hands containing 8 fingers and 2 thumbs in the propper order, 2 feet containing a total of 10 toes between them, all the right parts in all the right places, and they all grew and developed just as normally as any other child. I would venture to say at this point that it doesn't matter.

Usually they say to wait at least until your first trimester is over. Since you are already there, I would double check with your doctor first but it should be just fine. I think they worry more about the fumes than anything else.

I dyed my hair the whole time I was Prego. It doesn't hurt the baby. I looked into it also before I did it.

My OB said it was okay to dye or bleach during pregnancy. I had mine done a couple of times and the only thing that was different was that I seemed very sensitive (burned my eyes and nose) to the fragrance of the dye/bleach which never happened before or after pregnancy.

Hi K.-

I went thru the same thing while I was pregnant. I decided to talk to my hair stylist about the topic. She told me the biggest concern is how the color will take. Our hair goes thru a lot of changes while pregnant too. The color may not last as long, it may not turn out to be the color aimed for, etc. I did not have any problems with it. My children are perfectly fine. Hope this helps a little bit. Oh yeah, she also told me there are many stylist that won't because of the reasons I stated above. They don't want thier clients to be disappointed.

I died my hair while I was pregnant and it didn't take. The color kept washing out in the shower. After the pregnancy I tried to get it all to one color and almost turned my hair green. I ended up going to a professional and getting it fixed. I was reading some of the other responses so i really just think it depends on your own body and horomones. So it is kind of a gambling thing. Good Luck!

I dyed my hair while I was pregnant and everything was fine. If your still in the "morning or evening sickness" spells, I would wait til a little later, or if your prone to get sick or when you smell certain things (I couldn't stand tuna), I'd wait, but other than that I think you'll be fine. Think of all the things our mothers did that they're telling us not to do!!

Funny, I dyed my hair the whole time I was pregnant both times. My stylist AND MY DOCTOR said there was no harm to the mother or the baby. The hormones can affect the hair color but it is VERY RARE!
