Dvd Player Recommendations

I'm about to embark on a 10 hour road trip (that's 10 hours without stops and kids) with my 2 year old and 4 year old. I'm wanting to get a dual screen portable dvd player for the car. It will just be me, spouse is staying behind to do some work. Can anyone recommend such a player? All the reviews I am finding for some on the web are mixed. Given any dvd player, 1 person will love it and the other person will claim it will break in a week.

We bought sharp brand at Walmart. We have 6 kids and have bought all of them a dvd player. We bought some other brands, some last well, some don't. We don't have any dual players. Most of the sharp lasted well. DVD players are great to keep the kids occupied.
Blessings,

L., I encountered the same thing you did (horrible reviews). I finally ended up buying the dual screen Magnavox from Sears and also bought the 2 year protection plan for $11. We've had it for about 4 months with no problems; so far so good. btw...Sears will match a better price. We found it on Frys.com $40 cheaper and they matched it.

We have had our Sony player for 2 1/2 years now and it has lasted through toddler and husband! It is the single with the swivel screen, but I have been very happy with the brand. Depending on the cost, have you considered 2 players instead of trying the dual screen? Whatever you do - make sure you get one with either extra batteries or a car charger that reaches to the back seat. I also would get a tray to go over the car seats (onestepahead.com?) so that they can watch the DVD, color, play cars, or whatever comfortably.

My heart goes out to you! Good luck!

We had a panasonic that was gifted to us. It was purchased from walmart for around 150 (I think) a couple years ago and it was great. We used it sooooo much!! It was dual screen, had the hookups for you to use it in the house, came with a controller that had games built in, a remote, and headphones. If you want the model number just let me know. It was a wonderful gift. Ours got stolen, that is the only reason why I refer to it in past tense.

I would recommend a dual screen definitely. Buy one that will be easy enough for the 4 year old to open and put in a new DVD. Also, even if they love the DVD player, they will eventually get board with that too. Try stocking up on $ store stuff and "surprising" them every hour or so with something new. Another suggestion--we bought our first DVD player when we were leaving town for a hurricane, I bought DVD's at Wal-mart but didn't pay attention to the running time...they would play about 20-30 mins or so and then be over--get something long so you don't have to stop and change it very often. Have a safe trip.

We have a Audiovox 7" Dual Screen Mobile DVD Player. It came from either Target or Wal-mart and wasn't very expensive. We've used it with our 7yo and 3yo for about 1-1/2 years now and haven't had one single problem. It's easy enough for the 7yo to work by himself (and he has been since he was about 5-1/2). We've taken our DVD player on long trips across country (2400+ miles) and are very satisfied with its performance. I don't what the reviews for this player are, but it was gifted to us, and we have no regrets.

Hi L.,

I haven't read any other responses, but I got mine from Target. It's a RCA brand and my girls love it. I have a 7yo and 2yo and they loved it on our trip. This one is a dual screen and easily attached to the head rest.

Happy Shopping.

I currently have an rca dual screen/dvd player in the car.
It has 2 screens and 2 dvd players, so my kids ( ages 8 and 13 ) can watch different movies or attach a cord to both dvd players and they can watch the same movie.
The first one I had was an Audiovox one from Target. It still works and I have had it for 4 or 5 yrs. The only reason I got the new one was b/c my kids were arguing about what movies to watch .I have loved each one that I have.
I got them at Target.

Thank you for asking this question!! I've been wanting to know the same thing. I have been searching for one without negative reviews and it seems that all brands have reviews that say they break or stop playing in a week! Target had the dual screen RCA brand one on sale for $95 last week. It's good to know that Sears matches prices and buying the extra warranty on them IS a great idea! Good Luck to you on your trip and I'll be reading the rest of this thread for tips on which one to buy! Thanks again!! =)

Sorry to go in another direction, but have you considered getting the screens installed on the headrests and the dvd box in the car from the dealership? When we bought our truck it didn't come with it, but we asked them to put in in and it"s been working fine for 5 years now. The kids each get their own screen and the headphones help you out by not having to listen to the movie while you drive and you can listen to the radio or your i-pod while the kids watch tv. It's not that much and in my opinion it's a good investment. Good luck!

I also bought a dual screen DVD player from Target ( one on their black Friday specials) & we have had no problems with it.
