Good morning. I had two that did not eat baby food at all. I had a food grinder and fixed bland foods and ground it up. They loved it. Take care and enjoy.

I say sure she can have table food. Baby food hasn't been around since the beginning of time. People took what food they had, and made it baby ready. For instance if you fix green beans for supper...set some aside for your baby that is fixed without all the spices. I think that's the main thing you have to watch. Their little stomachs can't handle the spices. Good fresh green beans in my opinion are way more healthy than anything processed. You just have to mush them up, since she doesn't have any teeth. That's all baby food is. It's just food that we normally eat...without the spices. She still needs to have her formula or milk. With my second son...I never bought him baby food. He wanted table food at 5 months, and table food is what he got. He drank his milk, and ate with us. Good luck!

have you checked her gums? are they red and puffy? she might be cutting soem teeth. my little girl had 2 teeth at 4 1/2 months...whenver her gums bothered her, she had no interest in food or her bottle. if she is cutting teeth, try giving her Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. they are all natural and work wonders. but don't use orajel because it toughens the gum tissue and makes teething harder on the babies. also a dose of baby tylenol might help too.

I guess I'm a little confused...you started your baby on solids at 3 months and have stopped giving her formula or breast milk?! Is she gaining any weight at all? Have you told your doctor you've done this? No 5 month old baby is ready for table foods, their system is just starting to be able to handle the one-ingredient purees in stage one foods, usually advised to start closer to 6 months. You can try making your own and see if maybe it's a texture thing. Otherwise, go back to breast milk/formula and try again in a couple weeks to introduce one food at a time. If she refuses the bottle, try to start on a sippy-cup, but don't drop it until 12 months. At this point she should be getting all her nutrients in her liquids and solids are just to teach her to eat, she doesn't get much from them (ounce-for-ounce there is FAR more nutrients and more calories than in solids). So, step back, slow down, and follow AAP/WHO guidelines a little more closely :)
Good Luck!

As soon as my kids could pick up finger-foods, they refused to let me feed them. I switched to table foods with my kids around 6 or 7 months, and they did fine. Just watch the bowel movements to make sure she digests the food. My daughter still has trouble with raisins and corn and ends up with diarrhea if I feed too many to her, and she is 20 months old. Also, too much fiber and she may get constipated.

I agree with the mom who suggested giving your daughter whatever you are eating, unless there is something that she obviously can't eat like crunchy carrots or apples. My kids LOVE pasta, veggies (canned are easier for them when they don't have any teeth), bananas, canned peaches and pears, chicken, roast beef, hot dogs, bologna, fish sticks, PB&J, cereals like Cheerios or Kix, etc. You really can give her anything, as long as it is cut up into small enough bites.

There are a few things pediatricians recommend avoiding until after 1 or 2 years old like peanuts (allergy and choking hazard), peanut butter (allergy), strawberries (allergy), etc. I never really followed those rules because I found out about them after my son was already eating them. :) My pediatrician from Wisconsin recommended waiting until after 1 yr to introduce meats because it can be h*** o* the digestive system, but my daughter did fine as long as it was well-cooked and cut up very small. If you would like a list, I'm sure you can google foods to avoid feeding a baby, and you'll find a list. There are usually lists like that in the baby books, too.

I had a couple books that were indispensible in those situations. One was "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5" by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The other was by Dr. Sears, and I think it was called, "The Baby Book."

Hi E.,

My daughter went through stages where she didn't want to eat either. I made the mistake of intriducing solids. I say mistake because she was too young and developed GERD - an advanced form of acid reflux that has come back once and has caused her a lot of pain, her throat and esophagus were irritated and her voice was hoarse... she had such bad heartburn she couldn't sleep, always cried, and refused all food eventually.

I would advice you check with your Dr. but I'd be so careful of what you give her, she is so young that her body is just learning to digest. If you start her on food, it tastes so much better she'd definately refuse baby food.
I would try fruits and sweet veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots, squash.... I would always disguise the meats or not as good tasting ones with the sweeter veggies so she'd eat them.

I don't know about the bottle, my daughter never rejected it, still doesn't and she's 12 months.

Amy

I think she is definitely too young for table food. She'll have problems digesting it. Just keep trying the baby foods. I think I introduced table food around 7 to 8 months with both my boys. You may not think 2 months is a big deal, but her digestive system is still developing. Have you tried cereal with fruit in it. Or, my boys loved cereal with yogurt. Good luck!

All my kids were done with baby food by about 5-6 months. They were totally feeding themselves (with their fingers) by 6-7 months old. We just gave them whatever we were eating at a meal. We just cut everything up into pea-size pieces. Babies can gum anything. None of my kids had a single tooth until well after their first birthday (which is totally normal but not very common). Most babies don't have molars and those are teeth used for chewing... the front teeth are just for taking bites off. If your baby doens't like jarred/pureed baby food (and who can blame her!) then just give her real food. We pretty much skipped jarred food totally with our 2nd baby and just went straight to normal oatmeal (it's healthier than the disgusting tasting rice cereal anyways) and fork-smashed foods.

Just give her whatever the rest of the family eats at a meal, in small piles on her tray, and see what she does with it. It's great for the fine motor skills, too. :-) Some of my kids' favorites at that age.... canned peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, apricots, mandarin oranges and crushed pineapple; cereal like cheerios, rice krispies and kix; peas, green beans, corn; fresh, thinly sliced apples, plums, nectarines; bananas; avacados; thinly shaved/sliced deli meat like turkey, chicken and roast beef; toast cut into triangles or thin strips; french toast and pancakes (skip the butter and syrup until older due to the mess); plus the 'normal' snacks like goldfish crackers and graham cracker sticks.

Since she doesn't want a bottle (not a bad thing!) just give her a sippy cup. My kids started getting a sippy cup with some water in it with their meals around 5 months old. My son never used a bottle, just a sippy cup with breastmilk, formula or water once he figured out how to use it at 5 months old.
