Donating UNOPENED Asthma Inhalers

I don't want to trow away perfectly good Advair inhalers that I have for my daughter. I have 4 unopened boxes and I really don't think I should throw them away just like that. Does anyone have any idea where I can donate them?

What can I do next?

There are charitable organizations that collect medical suppllies for disaster relief. I don't know offhand if they also collect drugs, but it would be worth asking. If the following organizations don't accept medication, perhaps they can recommend other groups that will:

Doctors Without Borders <http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/?ref=main-men...;

American Red Cross <http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.d8aaecf21...;

I would find a free medical clinic that would probably take them. Many doctors who run those, do so just to help people and not for the money. Therefore, they invest a lot in it, but, get nothing in return.

Also, a shelter as mentioned below.

You might even take them back to the pharmacy, and, they could keep them for someone who may not be able to afford it.

I think a free medical clinic would be the best though.

Is it expired or not?

I assume not or you would not want to donate it....

I am sure, maybe your Pediatrician may have some low income patients, that are unable to pay for it, as Marda mentioned.
I would, check with your Pediatrician first. Although, I don't know what 'laws' they would have to worry about... but your boxes are unopened...

Perhaps your doctor, who prescribed them, would be willing to take them and give them to low income patients. Especially if they are still sealed or you can tell that they haven't been used.

I don't know the rules for Freecycle but you may be able to advertise and give them away.

Contact your doctor or a pharmacist. As you would with any medication, you need to be carefull as there are risks involved and not everyone should take Advair :) Inhalers also have expiration dates, which you no doubt already know. See what your doctor or pharmacists have to say about it. They are the ones who can legally despense medications.

Also, ask yourself this...if some person were donating a bottle of pain killers or blood pressure pills, or birth control...would you be willing to take it without medical guidence? I personally would not feel safe even if all intentions were good.

Psssh! I wish I were your friend and you could give them to me! Advair costs me an arm and a leg every month...even with insurance!

I would think that your doctors office may be able to take them back if they are not expired.

Check to see if there is a "free clinic" in your area....they will normally gladly accept unopened medicine of this sort!!! Advair is VERY expensive ( I work in a pharmacy as a clerk) so they will love to see these come in for their patients.

I contacted the Red Cross and they are not set up to accept medications. I also looked at Doctor's without Borders and they do not accept "In Kind" donations like medications. The Red Cross to suggest to me that I dial 211 which is a Federal Resource and Information Group which may have some other suggestions.

HealthReach Clinic in Waukegan or Mundilein (sp?) certainly would consider your donation. They are clinics that serve the medically underserved in Lake County. You are such an angel to consider donating them. Lake County has such a need for services but there is no money for people without insurance. God Bless You!!

I have severe asthma and thankfully filled three months worth of my prescriptions before losing my job in April. Without insurance, advair costs almost $300 a month, that my family doesnt have. I would be grateful to have the disckus's your daughter is NOT using. I have a large supply of unexpired alberterol for nebulizer's that I wont be using if I am able to maintain control of the disease through advair and singulair. Would your daughter have a need for them?

I know Tri-City Family Partnership, a free clinic in St. Charles took ours. Unopened unexpired inhalers that don't require any assistance to take such as a neb machine usually are accepted at free clinics as sometimes this is the only chance for their patients to get the meds they need. Check in your area, places to call would be your closest hospital and ask their social worker for the phone numbers of free clinics in the area.

Take them to your docs office. They maybe able to give them to someone who could use them. Or talk to them - maybe they know of a better place to donate them.
