Hi everyone,

My dog just had a tumor removed and it was analyzed to be 'Salivary adenocarcinomas'. They said the next stage would be to drain lymph nodes and clinical staging should be pursued. Not sure what this means. Our dog is a 8yr old Golden Retriever. He's active and can run/walk long distances without trouble. Would not have suspected any cancer. He is a bit overweight.

Does anyone have any advice/tips/experience to share? Maybe questions to ask the vet? The report says 22% of this type metasized to regional lymph nodes, and roughly 8.5% to lymph nodes and lungs. Not sure if that means when not treated with chemo or with treatment of chemo. We dont' really want to do chemo. If anyone has an alternatives for cancer treatments/lifestyle changes/supplements for dogs, please share those too.

Thanks in advance

N.

In general the percentages are what this type of cancer does with treatment. Without treatment the odd are greater it will spread. This is not always but when a doctor is describing a course of treatment that includes chemo that means it is taken into consideration in the diagnosis.

So what you may want to ask is what are the chances without chemo.

Regardless alternative medicine for animals? I wouldn't go there. Do you know Steve Jobs would probably be alive today if he hadn't tried alternative medicine. Yeah, he died of a very curable cancer at the stage in which it was caught. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Without knowing where you live, it's difficult to suggest. If you live in the Detroit metro area, there's a vet in Plymouth who does both conventional and alternative. Sheldon Vet.

There's also Betsy Adams who does holistic animal care. She's in the Dexter area I believe. She was wonderful when my cat was sick.

Otherwise check the internet for holistic/alternative animal care.

I don't have advice, N. - my dog died of cancer 3 days after being diagnosed. We did not go through any heroic measures to save him.

I just want to tell you how sorry I am - it is so hard to lose a beloved pet.

We are on our second golden retriever and they are the sweetest, most lovable dogs in the world. Unfortunately they are notorious for getting cancer. Our first golden got cancer around 9 years old and we did everything to save her -- chemo, radiation, experimental drugs, another surgery -- and in the end we only had her for another 1.5 years. And honestly, the last 6 months were not a high quality of life for her. We spent thousands of dollars on all the treatments. My husband and I vowed we would never put another dog through that again. I know you love your dog and the vets will make you feel like you should go to the ends of the earth to save your dog, but don't let them force you into endless treatments. If you want to look into treatment, be sure to get an estimate up front. The costs can spiral out of control quickly. Ask your vet what the prognosis is if you do nothing. Our poor dog got so sick from the chemo that she had to be hospitalized. There were many times that I felt like our dog was being more tortured than treated. My heart goes out to you. Best of luck.
