Breakthrough bleeding? Sorry if this gets a bit "TMI-ish," but here's my background:

I'm 41 and I have 2 uterine fibroids that have never caused me any problems. I was diagnosed with them about 10 years ago, and I've had two children with them, etc. I know they can start acting up and cause terribly long and heavy bleeding -but that's not what is happening to me right now. If you've have fibroid issues -did yours start this way?

I have normal periods -length and flow not too heavy or crazy, but over the last several months I've started looking like I was getting my period about a week before I did. There's enough to make you want to use a tampon for security (even though it's usually not heavy, but it never really gets going (and will often "take a day off") until my actual period starts 5-7 days later. NOW I'm having that same type of bleeding, but my last period was only 2 weeks ago and I've just ovulated. Again -not a full-on period situation, but enough to be annoying and out of place.

I just had my yearly appointment, and I mentioned it and, of course, the medical remedy is to go on the pill. I hate the pill and have never liked taking any form of it. The hormones REALLY seem to mess with me. My husband had a vasectomy this past summer, and it's been so nice to have no birth control responsibilities -so I'm not interested in that benefit from it. Also at my age, I'm not very excited about the pill or hormone therapy in general.

That leads me to my main question -do any of you have a non-hormonal approach you've taken that has helped with this or stopped it? I plan on Googling it and doing some research over the weekend, but I thought I would ask if there is anyone out there with actual experience!

What can I do next?

I consulted my nutritional book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" 3rd edition by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC and this is what it has to say in a nutshell. It isn't necessarily to reduce the bleeding, but to help with side effects of bleeding and fibroid growth:

Fibroids typically shrink after menopause due to drops in estrogen levels.
Other symptoms include: anemia from blood loss, bleeding between periods, fatigue and weakness due to blood loss, increased vaginal discharge, painful sex or bleeding after sex. Depending on location, they can cause pain in the legs, back and/or pelvis and exert pressure on the bowels or bladder or even block the urethra producing kidney obstruction.

Also, fibroids have a possibility of shrinking if you avoid oral contraceptives.

Suggested nutrients:

*Coenzyme Q-10, 30 mg daily for immune function and tissue oxygenation.

*Floradix Iron + Herbs from Salus Haus, as directed onlabel, do not take at the same time as vitamin e, as iron does not allow vitamin e absorption. For supplying iron easily and naturally and help with possible anemia.

*Garlic (Kyolic from Wakunaga), as directed on label. Powerful immune stimulant and antioxidant, inhibits tumor growth.

*L-Arginine 500mg daily, on empty stomach, with water or juice (not milk). Take with 50 mg vitamin b-6 and 100 mg vitamin c for better absorption. For enhancing immune function and may retard tumor growth.

*L-Iysine, 500 mg daily on an empty stomach, to be taken with the above to balance the L-Arginine.

*Miatake extract and/or Shiitake extract, as directed on label. To strengthen the body and improve overall health, have potent immunostimulant properties that inhibit tumor growth.

*Multivitamin and mineral complex, as directed on label. All nutrients are necessary in balance.

* vitamin A with mixed carotenoids. 25,000 IU daily, unless oregnant than 10,000 IU daily. Important immune function and to promote tissue repair. Use emulsion form for greater assimilation and greater safety at higher doses.

*Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, 3,000-10,000 mg daily, in divided doses. promote immune function and acts as antioxidant.

*Zinc, 30-80 mg daily. Do not exceed a total of 100 mg daily fromj all supplements. Needed for healthy immune system.

*plus copper, 3 mg daily to balance the zinc.

********************* Recommended Herbs **********************************

Dandelion root, milk thistle, scutellaria root (known as Chinese skullcap), and turmeric rhizome are all powerful antioxidants that supprt the liver while promoting the elimination of toxins.

Green tea is a powerful antioxidant with anticancer properties.

Red clover and burdock root both aid in cleansing the bloodstream.

hi there
I don't have fibroids, BUT... at 41.. you periods can begin to change from light to heavy and then back again... I have a feeling that part of the dilema here could be peri-menopausal... if you read up on that, you might find that that is it.. of course, I wouldn't rule anything out.. I just hate that doctors want to automatically resort to women taking the pill...... read up on perimenapuase if you haven't already and see IF your symptoms fit . I think you might find it useful.. I know many women whom once they found out it was that, they could better understand how to handle it and what the next step might be.. also, I heard a doctor say that IF women can get thru menopause WITHOUT having their fibroids removed, then the fibroids usually shrink.. the doctor thought that too many women who were diagnosed with those had them removed due to the medical establishment.. and really, that could have been avoided..

I too was pregnant with fibroids. I went to a holistic doc and had to take a lot of organic pills to keep my fibroids in check while pregnant. However, after giving birth I was given a less rigid plan to follow. I only informed my obgyn that I was seeing another doc in addition to him cause he was amazed that my fibroids did not grow but shrink. surgery avoided :)

My periods were very heavy, we are talking wearing the highest absorbing always pad all the time; not any more. My regime is now this:

1. Take organic fruit and veggie pills.
2. Eat more organic fruits & veggies.
3. No fried foods.
4. No caffeine.
5. Do not use the microwave (haven't in 3 yrs.)
6. Do not eat: beef or pork. (which wasn't bad because I hate pork and beef anyway; always have. I eat only chicken, turkey and seafood.)
7. Eat a lot raw veggies & fruits.
8. Any vitamins taken are finely processed.
9. Do a Detox every now and then. (which is purely eating raw fruits and veggies that are organic for a week or two weeks to cleanse the system.)

Overall, I'm doing well. I've had heavy periods since age 21; now 36. The heavy periods are now only down to one day of heavy bleeding and I'm happy about it (been heavy period free for a few years). I hope that you find some relief soon. Maybe try finding a holistic doc in your area that can develop a plan personally for you; so you too can find relief.

I developed fibroids during my 4th pregnancy. They grew fast & by medical standards I should have lost my daughter. I dealt with them for 2 years after delivery & couldn't take it anymore. I was becoming very anemic and they were getting larger (my uterus was the size of a 6 month pregnancy) people thought I was lying when I said I wasn't pregnant. I also was on the pill which I absolutely hated & my husband also had a vasectomy, so it was a waste & didn't help anyway.

My Gyne wanted me to have a hysterectomy leaving my ovaries. I also tried seeing a Chinese Dr for herbs & accupuncture. He said that people tend to come to him when the fibroids are too large and that was my case so he couldn't help me. October 2009 I opted for a myomectomy which was removing my fibroids surgically & repairing my uterus.

So find a true Chinese Dr & change your diet & hopefully that will help. Good luck
