Did You Use Baby Detergent?

Happy Friday!
We just got called about a foster care placement of a little guy! He's two months old, but is just now getting ready to leave the hospital. He was born at 27 weeks, so his little lungs needed to develop. He's doing great, and we are so excited to bring the little dude into our house! We've had placements of little ones in the past, the youngest we've had was three months old. We used Dreft for all of her clothes. I mentioned to my SIL that I needed to pick up a couple of bottles before we brought the baby home and she told me that it wasn't necessary and that she never used Dreft for her kids, she just used regular detergent. I guess I have always just assumed that Dreft was the only option for baby clothes, but now I am wondering what your thoughts are. Did you use Dreft for your baby clothes? How old were they when you started using regular detergent?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Wow, I had no idea I would wake up to so many responses! Thank you mamas!
Kari N - I think I will ask the nursing staff at the hospital what they recommend. Can't believe I didn't think of that!
And I think we probably will start using Free and Clear detergent for the rest of the family.

No Dreft for me. It has a lot of fragrance in it. I use Tide Free or All Free for the whole family.

I use Dreft. I used it for my first until they were about 5. It gets those stains out better. I also use Shout though. I use the powder though. I didn;t think the liquid did such a great job. I know a lot of people just throw the baby clothes into the wash with theirs using dye free and perfume free stuff. But in my house at least, the baby clothes were always pretty much a regular load anyway with blankets and clothes and such put in.

I used Dreft for the first year, and then switched to Tide (free and clear)...which I use on everything, so now I can do everything together. I remember people saying, oh just wait until you have to buy Dreft...it is sooo expensive! Blah Blah Blah...I went through 2 bottles in a year! A little bit goes a long ways. I liked it when my son was little, he smelled soo good! Now he smells like a big boy! :) (16 mo.)

I just used Tide Free, for all our clothes including baby's.

We still need to use Dreft for my son who is almost 3. We tried Tide but it made his skin issues worse. He was scratching all the time and I finally figured out it was the detergent. Switched back to Dreft and it's better. I use it now with my newborn, too, because it's gentler and I feel it's better for my baby. I don't think it's anymore expensive than regular detergent.

I used dreft until about 6 months of age, but with this baby you need to use dreft and make sure things are EXTRA clean so he does not end up back in the hospital again

We did for a bit, my husband has very sensitive skin so we were worried about the baby. We ended up having to use it on our shirts too, because her face would break out from contact. I know lots of people that just use the regular detergent that's free of dyes and perfumes, which is what we generally use but was still to harsh for her.

If the baby has sensitive skin, then you should use something like Dreft. Otherwise, you can pretty much use anything that's not heavily perfumed. I just use Tide Original and haven't had any issues with either of my two daughters. I do do what another responder said and use the 2nd rinse on my washer. I do that with all of our clothes, though.

Looking back, Rebecca made a really good point about the fact that he was so premature that you should be extra cautious.

Nope, just continued to use the same stuff we always used, which is Purex free and clear. I don't think a special detergent is needed for baby, it's just a way to get you to pay more for something you need. I always do a double rinse on the clothes too, to make sure there is no residue left behind.
