Diaper Rash - San Francisco, CA

Hi there,
Our daughter has a diaper rash, I think from diarrhea that was caused by antibiotics (her fist cold seems to have snowballed). Any suggestions of how to clear it up fast? I'm keeping her clean and using diaper cream, hoping it will help. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it except when I gently wipe her when changing her.

Thanks!

As far as just a diaper cream I only use the Weleda Calendula diaper care. It works like a charm right away. My brand new baby girl was starting to get rashes and I put it on and her buns are beautiful now. I put it on at every diaper change to give her sensitive skin some protection. Definately include the advice for the probiotics from everyone in your case.

H.,
I see a few other's that had said about the probiotic's I have to agree my son had a little stomach flu which left him vomittin and diarrhea, I used the probiotics and he stopped and was much better in 2 days.
As for the diaper rash my son had his share. He even had a yeast infection down there too. I swear I have tried all of the diaper creams and I only use the Original Destin in the tub and I lather lots on. I use to use Medicated power as well. That always worked for him.
I agree with the wipes. You have to use a wash cloth or something with no perfume or scent or alcohol in them.

Good luck....

Hi H.,

My daughter has very sensitive skin so we've been dealing with bad diaper rashes off and on since she was born. We thoroughly wipe with water-soaked baby washcloths and pat dry with a clean washcloth before putting on her diaper again. We only use baby wipes (the "sensitive" kind) to wipe off poop, and then wipe with the water washcloth afterwards to remove the wipe residue, because as previous posters said the wipes can be irritating. If she is having an outbreak we apply a cream after cleaning and drying, and rotate between the ones we have found to work the best. Bordoux's Butt Paste, Aquaphor, and plain petroleum jelly work well for her. But as someone else also mentioned, it could potentially be a yeast infection as a result of antibiotic use, so be sure to check with your doctor if it doesn't clear up in a day or two. Best of luck and hope it clears up soon!

Hi H. - Just a note - I did not notice anyone else mention that it is important to be sure whatever you put on your baby's skin is clean and green and has no toxic ingredients that could be absorbed into her body through her skin. Visit www.findgreenhere.com, Safe Cosmetics page and go to cosmetic database link. I typed in "Desitin" and was surprised to find it had a mostly 5 rating - in the moderate hazard category! I wish I had had this resource when my kids were little but we are checking all of our personal care products now and tossing the ones that do not fall into a more safe category. I am sure there are some organic or natural products you can find and then check them in cosmetic database before using. Best of luck and many blessings, V. G. :o)

I would rinse the wipes before you use them, or a damp cloth, the chemicals in the wipes burn. You may want to consider using probiotics to produce the good bacteria in her tummy when she takes antibiotic. You could also increase yogurt to keep the probiotics in her tummy while she's on antibiotics.

Triple paste in the tub. It works great. Slather on a thick layer, especially at bedtime.

This may be a yeast infection, which are especially common after taking antibiotics. Yeast will go away with an anti-fungal ointment (call your doctor), but will NOT go away with diaper creams.

a nurse suggested bag balm to us. it has worked great. if my daughter's rash is bad, we sprinkle on some medicated baby powder (gold's bond i believe). our daughter's booty is sensitive. when home with us we change her every 2 hours (except when sleeping) and that seems to work. when she is at daycare (3 days) they change her 3-4 hours sometimes and by the 3rd day she usually has a rash. once it was so bad we got a cream from the doctor and it was gone in a day. it was perscription but only $7 i think at walgreens. good luck.

We always used Aquaphor. My girls both have very sensitive skin and they were both prone to diaper rash, especially when they slept in wet diapers overnight. The Aquaphor helped prevent diaper rash, and cleared up any diaper rash that did develop, very quickly. It's a mixture of vaseline and mineral oil, basically.

And when your little one is out of diapers, Aquaphor is also a fantastic lip balm.

Good luck!

Hi H.,
My daughter has had a couple of terrible diaper rashes over the years and the ONLY diaper cream that always works is Weleda Calendula diaper care. I get it at Whole Foods. It isn't cheap but it only takes a little bit. I use wet paper towels to wipe her bottom, apply a small amount of Weleda, then some Desitin. It clears up within a few days. Also having a little naked bottom time helps. As to the antibiotics, you will want to get some probiotics to balance her system. Again, I get them at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section.
Sincerely,
L.
