My husband is self-employed,so we do not have dental coverage. Well, I took my son to a pediatric dentist today for a routine visit (cleaning, X-rays, flouride treatment) and was FLOORED at check out when they told me that would be $304.00! Is it so high because I went to a pediatric specialist, or is this just the typical cost of dental care nowadays? Any advice would be appreciated!

Dental care is expensive! The next visit shouldn't be as expensive because they shouldn't have to take full mouth X-rays. You might ask if they give a discount for paying with cash. My dentist gives a 15% discount, which was VERY helpful when it came time for pulling the wisdom teeth!

You can call around to see if you can find a less expensive dentist.

Unfortunately, Dental prices are HIGH even WITH dental insurance. :-( All I do know is that "6 Day Dental" place has great coupons for everything that your son just had done for first time customers with no insurance ... wish I could have told you sooner. :-/

Otherwise, no real advice, just empathy!

Happy Easter. I am an office manager at a general dentist office in the highland park area and what you paid for your child seems a little high. That is what we charge for a New Adult pt cleaning with full xrays and exam... I would definatly check around, because that seems high too me....

That does seem high esp for a child. You were probably charged more for an inital exam as well if it was his first time tehre. I would call around and gets costs. I work for a family dentist in Allen, we see lots of kiddos and love it!! Good luck!!

ITs my experience that pediactric dentist are more expensive and its crazy they dont really do any thing to them at a cleaning that you dont already do at home other than x rays...

find a good family dentist they costs less but I find that ALL dentists are expensive.

We are self-employed too, and we try to barter ANY time we can! We just found a dentist that will do just that! It's great! Also, as self-employed, we have our health insurance through NASE (National Association for Self-Employed). It's not cheap insurance, but talk to your CPA about how you can take ALL of your medical expenses as a business expense or deduction. If we're going to have to pay alot we might as well get as many benefits as we can!!

Good Luck.

Well we pay around 250.00 per month for insurance through my husbands work and at a regular dentist there was no charge for what you stated you had done. It's covered 100% when it's considered preventative. So at least you don't have the monthly charge but god forbid something serious comes up.

We do not have dental insurance so we are a "cash pay" patient. That is high - I think. We have never paid above $200. I think our bill is around $185 - with cleaning, x-rays, ect and then around $125 when we don't have the x-rays. I would call around and they should be able to tell you the rates when you make an appointment. We do take my son to a "pediatric dentist". Her information is:

Kelli Ettelbrick
3333 Preston Rd. Ste 104
Frisco, TX 75034
###-###-####
* near Stonebriar mall

She is great and her staff is as well. She always makes my son feel very comfortable.

My husband is self-employed as well so we are in the same boat. We even had difficulty with our health insurance. They didn't cover any of the pregnancy or delivery. Everything was out of pocket.

We decided to go to a pediatric dentist for our children's first dental visits just because I wanted someone that was familiar working with small children. I don't know where you are located but we went to Dr Tim Brister in McKinney. He is a pediatric dentist and we were charged around $200 ( a little less for my younger child because he didn't require all the same x-rays that my daughter did ) per child and received an additional 10% discount for being cash pay. He and his staff were all wonderful and very kid friendly.

HTH. Good luck.

I've taken my daughter to Pediatric Dentist Tipton Asher for 10 yrs. He does not deal with insurance and you file it yourself.
We do routine visits, I have never seen a bill over $200 and I have always been reimbursed for the full amount.

It was extra high because you saw a pediatric dentist. We lost our insurance for a while and I was also shocked. I asked before the appointment, though. We switched to a plain old "family dentist" and my girls did fine and he treated them with out any problems. you may want to consider finding someone else. Our bill was cut in half!
