i have a 2 yr old who is a thumb sucker. she sucks her thumb mostly at night for bed however i have noticed her thumb has gotten red and looks almost like it has blistered but there is truley no visable blister. i have tried to put a+d ointment with a bandaid on her thumb during the day but she pulls it off. and at night she wont even hear of it. the thumb itself is not a open sore but it sure looks sore any suggestions on what to do thanks H.

What can I do next?

My three year old sucks her thumb also and has that sore on it - my daughters is however calloused. Doctor is not concerned with her thumb but more concerned with her teeth from sucking her thumb. Get ready for braces is what she told me... Just watch it. It should be ok.

My daughter used to suck her thumb too. We put some hot suace on her thumb everytime we saw her going for the mouth. Not alot just a drop. But she stopped sucking after just a few days of that. The discoloration on her thumb took a few weeks to go away.

Please call you doctor, Your daughter could have a staph infection. Usually when an area is discolored and warm, this means something could be going on, especially since she puts this thumb in her mouth it makes it slightly more supseptable to infection.. Good Luck

As crazy as this sounds, put some Crisco on it. The crisco is safe to go in the mouth, tastes gross, and will provide a moisture barrier to help it heal. Good luck!

My daughter is five and still sucks her thumb. She has that same sore. I bought some type of polish to stop nail biting, and I am going to see if that works. My oldest daughter is now 24 ( I have 20 years, alomst, between my kids) and she was a thumb-sucker. She developed the infection and had to have it lanced, drained, and an antibiotic. She still sucked her thumb, and there was nothing I could do about it. She's survived to be 24 and I keep telling myself my five year old will outgrow thumb-sucking, too! I'll let you know how this polish works on my five year old. I am going to try it this weekend.

My daughter is three and has been a thumb sucker since day one. Her thumb also looks like this, but doesn't seem to cause her any discomfort. I assume it is red from constantly being wet and warm from being in her mouth. If you're really that concerned about it, ask her doctor or you could try the 'Thum" liquid. It is bitter and when swabbed on her thumb, she will not want to put it in her mouth.

Hello H.,
My daughter just turned two in September and she has always been a thumb sucker. Her thumb too is calloused and with the weather getting colder, hers has gotten chapped and started to crack some. It doesn't seem to ever bother her at all,..but it does look unattractive..lol.. We keep her hands clean, lotion on them, and I do sometimes put a band aid on it with some neosporin. So far,...it seems to be okay. We have never had a problem with infection. Just keep an eye on it and definitely mention it to your doctor if your really concerned. It's better to bug your pediatrician with lots of questions than to spend time stressing,..atleast that's my policy :) Good luck with your little princess!

Take Care,
B.

H.,

My daughter is almost 5 and (boo on me) still sucks her thumb. I notice in the winter and change of weather he thumb gets like that too. In the cold cold winter it gets chapped and crackes. I just us the Carmex chapped lip balm. I personally have not used anything to make her stop sucking her thumb. I have started to ask her only to suck it at nap or bedtime and will reward her if she does so. I feel like potty training she will stop when she is ready.

Good luck,
B. A.

Try the Thumb Guard offered on One Step Ahead. My daugher was a terrible thumb sucker. We had her wear these all the time and now she only wears them at night. Although she's reverting for some reason so we probably will have to have her wear them all day for a while. Just make sure you give her thumbs a break from the guard so she doesn't get blisters from the guard too. Good luck!! Hint! If you run out of the wrist bands you can use a ribbon versus buying new wrist bands.

Both my kids still suck thier thimbs, ages 3 and 5, and both have the boo boo you are talking about. My son's did get infected once and he did have stalph infection there. The entire thumb turned green and blistered, not just the boo boo area and it happened in a matter of 4 hours. He was in the hospital for 2 days. We now just try to wash their hands as often as we can, because they refuse to stop sucking. All in due time, I suppose.

Hi H.:
My name is R. (Rose) and I also have a 2 1/2 yr. old boy that also sucks his thumb and when he gets tire of his right thumb he sucks his left one. I have tried to put on him a medicine that they have for children that suck thier thumbs but that didn't do anything to him. They say that if you put things that are hot like hot suace it works but I don't dare do that because he might rub his hands on his face and that can cause severe pain on his eyes. I don't know if eventually our children will out grow that stage but I just let my son be and hopefully he will stop as he gets a lil older in age. Be patient with your child and give him time and hopefully he will stop sucking on his finger which ever finger it may be. His was my first child that ever suck his thumbs because my other 4 never did and even my baby doesn't suck her fingers either not to say she didn't try but I think she didn't like it very much. Pacifiers don't help either. Well I hope that my words can be of some help.
