Dangers of Shoes at Night?

Hi ladies.

My two-year-old son is VERY enamored of his "light-up shoes" and wants to wear them all the time -- including in bed and in the bath. The night before last, I told him "no, sweetie, we don't wear shoes in bed; I'll put them right on this shelf where you can see them." That led to a World-War-3-sized tantrum, and to his waking up twice screaming for his light-up shoes to be put back on. Last night I was utterly exhausted, for a whole variety of reasons, and I put said shoes back on over his PJs thinking I'd sneak back in and take them off. Well, I was so tired I went to sleep an hour after he did and slept the whole night!

My question is, what are the dangers of having a child sleep in sneakers? Could they cut off his circulation? They're a little on the big side, still -- I got them with room to grow -- but of course that'll change as he grows. Or can we safely ride this phase out?

Thanks so much!

Mira

Hey if I had super cool light up shoes I'd wear them 24/7 too. I make hand knit socks for my grandkids to wear in the winter and when I give them the first couple pair they always wear them for 2-3 days straight including wanting to wear them in the bath tub. Kids are just nutty like that. The less battles the better so just let him wear his shoes and you'll both get a good night's sleep.

I don't think there are any dangers in it... and you know, you really have to pick your battles.
I can understand letting him know you are in charge, but, really, if it doesn't hurt him (or you), what's the big deal?

He'll outgrow it before he's married! LOL

My 9 year old daughter wears her socks under her jammies and she often wears a hat to bed.... I am half expecting her to want to wear her gloves one of these nights. But, ya know, they are only kids once... let them have some fun with it and remember to enjoy it while it lasts... they really do grow up too soon!
I have a 16 yr old and a 17 yr old..... believe me the time just flies!

Remember this too shall pass.

Dear M.,

What a cute story it really made me laugh. I am sure there is no danger of sleeping with his shoes on, however I don't know how comfortable it can be. You said you are a working mom I assume he is in daycare. At my daycare the children have to nap with their shoes on so I am sure he is used to it, so as long as it is not bothering him let him be. Just a suggestion, if he has a favorite stuffed animal he sleeps with maybe you can convince him to let his little friend wear his shoes to sleep. Good luck!!

I have no real advice for you, but I am still laughing at your description of your son's tantrum. I'm sorry, but it's hysterical!

You're an awesome mom. I imagine it's no big deal to let him wear his shoes!

I don't think there are any inherent dangers for sleeping with shoes on - but it sounds liek you don't want him wearing shoes to bed so you have to be firm. I know it's not easy and He may throw a tantrum but you are the boss and he will learn soon enough - it may take a few nights of major tantrums to get him to understand that YOU are in charge. Don't give in - that's letting him know that HE is the one in control.

:) i'm sure its a phase, my daughter always has something she's obsessed about, and then forgets all about very soon. i can't see any harm in it, maybe dirty sheets:)

Let him wear them - if they hurt, he will take them off. Too cute!!

Yes, you can safely ride this phase out. There is no harm letting him sleep with shoes on. He'll realize soon enough that it isn't the comfiest and he'll go back to normal (if there is such a thing for a 2 year old).
