Hi,
I am making a slow cooked oatmeal in my slow cooker to be done when we wake up in the morning. The recipe says to cook on "Low" for 6 hours. My slow cooker has a high setting and a low setting with corresponding times. The setting for 6 hours is under high. Does this matter? Should I pick the 8-hour low setting, or stick with the 6 hours called for in the recipe even though it says "high" on my slow cooker? Does any of this make sense? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks! I'll set it at low and then have my husband turn it off when he gets up in about 6 hours. I'm using rolled oats (not the quick ones that are done in 5 minutes, these typically take 10-30 minutes on the stove). It's a recipe with cinnamon, dried fruits, and shredded apple. I have found that everything tastes better when cooked more slowly! Plenty of soups, stews, and casseroles are made in an hour or less, but take that same thing and make it in a slow cooker to get really rich flavor.

I would set it on low and set a different timer in the house (oven or microwave) for the 6 hour mark.

I'd stick with the low setting at 8 hours.

hmmm..I have never heard of slow cooked oatmeal. Isn't that a long time to cook oatmeal..when it only takes about 5 minutes on the stove?
Not sure if you are talking about a different type of oatmeal dish :-)
some type of oatmeal meatloaf perhaps?.
I think oatmeal in a crockpot, will come out complete mush.
Maybe I am learning something new ;-)

When I do this I use low and cook it for about 8 hours. Are you using steel cut oats? I've been cooking steel cuts oats this way for a few years with really good results, I use 4 parts liquid to 1 part oats, but I've never tried it with rolled oats, I'm not sure they would work.
Good luck!

Set it on low and turn it off after 6 hours. I don't think the corresponding times matter... everything cooks for different times, the slow cooker manufacturers doesn't expect you to always cook at those times... are they shut off times?

It means that you set it on Low for 6 hours. Just because the crock pot's 6 hour setting is under high -that doesn't matter for the oatmeal recipe. You should be ready to get up and turn it off in 6 hours. I wouldn't let it go for 8. I'm not an oatmeal fan, but I've seen a number of recipes for slow cooker oatmeal lately and if you leave it too long, it will scorch. Even on low, many slow cookers get pretty hot.

We probably have the same crock pot! I would use the low setting and start it either 6 hours from when you want it done or just get up 6 hours later and turn it to warm. 8 hours would probably be way too long. Happy oatmealing!

Low and get yourself a lamp timer that can control the times for you. I always hate how they make the new slow cookers to complicated!

Add a bit more water and set it on low. Don't use the high setting. It will dry out and scorch sooner than the recommended 6 hours when it's on high. i.e. if temp is on high, it'll be done and start to scorch probably in 4 hours. The temperature is always more important than the time.

Steel cut oats take longer to cook than rolled oats and quick cooking oats takes less time than rolled oats. The type of oats you're using will make a difference.

Actually, if it's quick cooking you don't have to cook them it at all. My cousin sets his oatmeal to soak over night and then just heats it up in the microwave in the morning. Or you can eat it cold if you want.
