Cooking for Others After Having the Stomach Flu

I just got over a 12 hour bout with a stomach virus. It was nasty but I feel much better. I am supposed to make cupcakes for my son's spring party tomorrow, and I was also going to make some things for guests we are having on Saturday. Should I not do these things? We have all these seasonally appropriate sprinkles I hate to let go to waste, but I don't want to get a whole class of preschoolers sick. What would you do? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I wouldn't chance it. These stomach bugs are extremely contagious and can be serious for some. You can also be contagious after symptoms have resolved. I learned ALL about it last week when this stomach bug sent my 3 yo to the hospital for an overnight stay. Just play it safe and go store bought.

As long as your hands are meticulously clean (shouldn't have to touch much--you could always wear food service gloves) and you don't get saliva in the batter, it will be fine.

Wear a mask and wash your hands a lot.

I bet you will be fine, but since you are probably feeling rundown, I'd buy plain cupcakes that you purchase and bring the sprinkles for the kids to put on. So much fun!

In our schools they don't allow homemade treats (probably for reasons similar), so we have to do store bought. Kids don't need pricy cupcakes either, since they usually only eat a little.

I would run to the store and purchase some treats. I wouldn't risk it.

If you feel up to it, go ahead. You're not going to make anyone else sick.

I would personally go purchase the cupcakes for your son's spring party tomorrow, not worth getting other sick. We got sick from someone who cooked who was sick once and it was awful. The nororvirus can live in you for up to 2 wks.

I'd play it safe and buy unfrosted cupcakes and store made frosting. Spread the frosting on the cupcakes (using gloves) and use the sprinkle.

Hope the part is a huge success! Do you get to go and enjoy it?

You're better now - you're no longer contagious. I'd worry more abou tthe stuff you prepared the day before you got sick!
