Hello. I went to Dr.Barnett(RE) last week and was advised to do an IUI with a combination of medications (Gonal-f rff, Ovidrel, and Clomiphene). Has any one done this before and did you get pregnant? I really want this to work but do not want to get my hopes up. Please advise.

What can I do next?

I had a successful IUI with a different combination of drugs with Dr. Barnett back in 2003, first try. I don't think he takes many cases if he doesn't think he'll have success. Good luck!

I did Ovidrel, Clomiphene and had IUI done. The first round of Clomiphene didn't help me ovulate, so had to increase the dose. The second round did the trick, so I took the Ovidrel and had the IUI performed. I thought it didn't work, but lo-and-behold, I now have a 4 1/2 month old laying next to me!!! Good luck and God bless!

I went to Dr. Barnett in 2004 and he did a combinations of medications with me and IUI. I got pregnant the first time. The next time I was able to get pregnant on my own, so my boys are 21 months apart. Good Luck!

I went to him also. He was great. He said to try the IUI and if I could get pregnant I would. So I tried it and it didn't work. Twice. I think it would have worked if my tubes were working properly. So I did IVF and got my twins on the first try. Good Luck.

I bet because of your age he is wanting to be more aggresive. I have done the clomid and iui and it worked eventually. But, i think i would be willing to try any combinations that weren't life threatening to have a baby.

No matter what you are doing to conceive you will always have your hopes up. That is just normal. Sometimes the meds work and sometimes they don't. That is just life though. You have to think none of this lasts forever it is just temporary until you get pregnant. Then all that stops. I also had to take the Heparin shots for my entire pregnancy. but, I would do it all over again. I never complained about it. Now that my daughter is older it all seems like a blurr. My dr. told me nobody will ever ask you how your child got here. he was so right. That is what is so great about fertility dr.'s they have the same goal as you...to get you pregnant.

Dear S.,

My husband and I went through two years of infertility treatments, starting with just a round of clomid. Then it was changed to include clomid with a trigger shot. When those didn't work (I responded well to all medications and was only 25 at the time), we changed to clomid with IUI. That didn't work so we went to Gonal-F, IUI, and trigger shot with progesterone supplements. This finally did the trick after we added in the progesterone and a couple of surgeries.

The fact that you are 38, and have been trying for 6 months sounds right on track for moving straight to a medicated IUI. If you research the numbers, the percentage of success rates is much lower if you just do the medication. Adding in the IUI increases your chances. My original doctors were not aggressive because of my age and my responses so it took much longer to figure out what would or wouldn't work. I had to request being transferred to an RE who finally took me seriously.

I know how much you want this to work and my advice to you is this - hope, but be realistic. Realize that for some, it happens the first time and everything works out perfectly. For others the road is much longer. Do your research. Ask questions. That way you can be an advocate for yourself if need be.

Good luck.
H.

Hi S.,

That is EXACTLY what we did and it worked the 3rd time. We now have twin boys and sounds we had the same situation as you  No reason to not get pregnant other than age I guess.. Its work to do those medications and you are at the Dr. quite a bit but its worth it! Clomid made me feel really bloated, emotional, cranky... you name it... but again it was worth it. hang in there and GOOD LUCK!

I took Clomid for 5 months with no success of getting PG. We did 1 round of Clomid with an IUI and it worked like a dream. We have a healthy, happy little boy now. I was almost 37.5 when we did this.

Good luck!

My wife and I did three IUI's unsuccessfully before doing IVF which was successful. I don't remember the drugs involved, but the idea was to increase the potency with each attempt. People will say not to get your hopes up, nor to be too discouraged if it doesn't work, but my wife would tell you that is impossible. Good luck and I hope things work out for you and your husband -

That is the usual protocol to start with. I did not happen to get pregnant with IUI, but I have had friends that did. If that does not work then he will most likely try it once more then go to IVF. IVF is so expensive and timely so they don't start there. Hang in there and good luck!! You will have your baby!!!!!!!!
