My brother used to get these all the time!!! He now takes the vitamin Lysine. You can get it at any pharmacy or a place that sell vitamins. Take one daily and you will see you wont get them!

There is NO cure for cold sores. They are part of the herpes complex of viruses and can be treated not cured. Once you have them, you'll always have them.

Some look literally like blisters on your lips. Others look like big pimples. You can go to Google.com/images and search for cold sores and see examples.

You can use products like HerpecinL, Abreva and Carmex (both over the counter) to help lessen the effect of the cold sore. But, I'd recommend speaking with your doctor or a pharmacist first to make sure what you think it is is really a cold sore.

Yes, like Jill B mentions, you can get a Rx for Valtrex. But, it's a serious medication, and I'd recommend learning all about its side effects and FDA approved uses before asking for a prescription to see if it's the best option for you.

Good luck.

Hi M.,

It can be cured and prevented as well. It is the herpes simplex virus but it will only present itself if your immune system is weak. I recommend an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex to get your immune system working right. There is only one on the market guaranteed to absorb.

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that is depleted when the immune system is not working right. Putting it back can heal and prevent cold sores and will assist the vitamins if they have been depleted by stress or strain. You can pick L=Lysine up at a health store.

Melaleuca alternafolia oil will also help cure and soothe the pain as well. The oil actually absorbs deep into the tissue and starts the healing process from the inside out. Besides other qualities it is an antiviral which is what the cold sore is.

If you feel a cold sore coming up (they usually tingle) you can delay the outbreak and sometimes even stop it with an ice cube. Sounds funny but the virus is living and the ice will slow the metabolic speed of the outbreak to slow or stop until you can take care of it another way. If you are away from home with nothing that can help, you can always get your hands on ice!

Hope I helped! Let me know if you'd like more info...

Tea Tree Oil, or Melaleuca oil is the best treatment topically. It kills the virus right away. It'll take a few days for the sore to start diminishing, but if you get the oil on it at the first sign of tingling, it won't get any bigger.

Hi there. If I feel one coming on I take L-lysine. It is a supplement and I looked it up on line and it says to take 2000 or more milligrams(think that the tablets are 500 a piece) to help it go away. It also seems to short the life of one. I also use Carmex on mine. Hope this helps.

I would suggest probiotics. If you go to a local health food store you should be able to ask one of the consultants there. I know probiotics are good for many things.

Honestly, this will sound crazy but I have never found a better or faster cure.

Deoderant. yup. good old Secret.

It contains Aluminum...put on the sore in very small doses (very thin coat) it will dry the sore out super quick.

I used to get cold sores all the time. Big, painful sores on my upper lips and under my nose. Nothing helped to get rid of, or prevent them and I tried it all. One day a complete stranger told me that his wife got them ,too. He siad that she would put a very thin coating of deoderant on hers and they were gone in days. I didn't believe him but was willing to try anything...two days later the big sore was almost gone!!!

When I feel one coming on I put a thin coat of deoderant in it followed by a thin coat of Abreva. If I catch it early enough it will go straight to a small scab and the whole thing will be gone in 2 days. If I catch it a little later it will last 4-5 MAX. I put deoderant and abreeva on it twice a day...in the morning and before bed.

best of luck. try it...it works!!

The best way to get rid of them and take care of them when you feel one starting is to get some yogurt that has the fruit on the bottom. Not the pre-stirred. It seems to have some antibodies that take care of them. My mother swears by it.

I recommend taking L-Lysine. If you are susceptible to getting them often, I would take it every day. If you only get them once in a while, I would start taking it as soon as you feel one coming on and don't stop until it's gone. You can do that AND use a lipbalm with sunscreen. My husband gets them ALL THE TIME and those two things are his biggest help. Also, when he gets them, he uses campho-phenique (sp?) - and that helps a lot too. Good luck!

You have to get a prescription for Valtrex, and have it available at home. You take it the minute you feel a tingle. 2 tabs right then, then 2 12 hours later. It knocks them out. I have tried every single home remedy, over the counter and any other voodoo recommended. Nothing but time can help one they are there. Motrin will help with the pain and swelling. Don't waste your money on Abreva, carmex, peppermint oil........They are so painful, I feel for you!

My fifteen year old gets them....we've used Zovirex (sp?) which is prescription only and Abreve (over the counter) seems to work just as well for her. The trick is to apply it as soon as you feel that tingle, before they totally break through.

Lysine is helpful, both as a pill and a topical application. I've always liked the little tube of Super Lysine Plus. But for stopping the pain, a gel called Sting Stop made by Boercke and Tafel has really helped.

Stay as healthy as you can and keep stress as minimal as possible to help reduce the frequency of outbreaks. They do hurt!
