I have a great high powered metal fan that I need to clean. What is best for removing dirt and rust from metal with out taking the finish off? Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

try CLR or if you can take the cover off, soak it in baking soda and water. You can call the manufacturer. I use gloves, cotton balls and CLR. Then Cotton with water to rinse.

a small amount of your favorite cola will eat the rust away -- think what it does for your stomach.

The rust has already taken the finish off. If you can take it apart clean it will and sand the rusty parts or use Naval Jelly to dossolve the rust. Then spray paint it with a rust resistant paint. There is a touch up paint you can use in a jar I think if you can't take it apart. Hope that works.
