Solumel works. It doesn't cover the odor. It neutralizes what causes it. It will also disinfect as well.

Hello,

White vinegar gets rid of the ammonia smell completely. It works on anything from bedpans to laundry. I'm not sure if it can be put in the steamer, but I know it works. As for any stains, the best thing I have found is Spot Shot. They sell small cans in the regular stores and extra large ones at Sam's Club in a double pack. This has saved my carpets and upholstery on many occasions.

Hope this helps:)

We used urine gone. I found it at a Walgreens in MO, they might have it at an 'as seen on TV' store. The other thing that a friend used was Odo-Ban. She got it at Sams wholesale, I am not sure where else it is available.

I shop with a natural based product company and have used Sol-u-mel to remove odors from carpet in the past. It has gotten ride of cat urine smell and is great at getting out stains also. Our cat is a hunter and brings us gifts from time to time. I had to get a blood stain out of the carpet and this worked great. Send me a message if you want and I will introduce you to sol-u-mel.

Sol U Mel has done wonders for me with puppy "accidents" gets rid of smell and stain. Also good on furballs and many other stains. I sometimes call it my Wonder Cleaner.

I watched one show and the guy was talking about having to take up the pad under the carpet because the odor was trapped below the carpet.

Hi E.,

We have 3 dogs as well and run into the same issue. they are chihuahua's and can be a challenge to train. I block off the rooms and let them out when home and keep them in kennels which has helped to train them-finally. But we still have to clean carpets. Here is my trick that I have come up with- at the pet store you can find - Nature's Miracle- it works fantastic for the smell- you can get just a spray and one to put into the steam cleaner- I use both. Then in my cleaner I also mix oxi-clean, vinegar, the nature's miracle and of course HOT water. This seems to do the trick. I've had to do it twice before but usually once takes care of everything-depends on how much you have to clean. I hope this helps. Good luck!!!

The best products I have found to clean up the mess are Natures Miracle and regular old vinegar. Both products claim to mask the scent and prevent future accidents, but I haven’t found this to be true. What I usually do is clean the mess right away with Nature’s Miracle (or substitute vinegar if we are out). Once everything is cleaned and dry, I use Sol-u-mel and spray it on the carpet to eliminate the smell. Sol-u-mel has done the best job eliminating the nasty urine smell from the carpet.

I agree with the Sol-U-Mel I use it on odors and stains in my house ... works for pet odors, diaper odors, musty towel odors (in the wash). I have also used it to remove permanent ink from my child's desk and silly putty (stuck on like cement) on a stuffed animal. You get it at an on-line store - where you shop by being referred by other customers. Let me know if you are interested and I can refer you... they are having a great special right now that you could take advantage of.

Look into "Nature's Miracle"- the liquid version. It can be found at pet stores.

I've used it when my pets or when kids had accidents.

You might have to pull up the carpet in those areas and replace the pad underneath. It's one thing to get the smell out of the carpet itself, but it's a whole other story trying to get it out of the pad. I bet what you're smelling is the pad that is saturated with dog pee! If you can't get the smell out yourself, try a professional carpet cleaning company. If that doesn't work, maybe have hardwood or tile installed instead! That way you can just wipe up any doggy accidents.

Sorry Im so late responding to this, but I went out of town and purposly left all electronics at home.
We have four cats and have found that Kids and Pets brand carpet cleaner is great. It gets out the stain and the smell. We have one cat that hates the litter box if one of the others has used it. If we clean one of his "accidents" with Kids and Pets he never uses that spot again! The rest of our cats are normal box users, but he is like no other cat I have ever known. Anyway, the cleaner is super. It even got the vomit smell of curdled milk out.(we didn't know one of the twins was allergic to milk for quite a while-Dr. kept saying reflux was the cause) The Kids and Pets cleaner is also great for a huge list of things that stain and/or smell. It even gets printers ink out of clothes and carpet!

I know from experience that vinegar works wonders on that problem. You can just put some in your steam cleaner. I personally hate the smell of vinegar, but that dissipates in just a short while and then everything smells nice and clean. Works great for cleaning upholstered furniture too, and I've never had a problem with discoloration, etc. Whenever we have an "accident" on the couch, I use vinegar in the steam cleaner and then put the couch cushions out in the sunshine to help them dry more quickly.

Another good freshener for your carpet is to sprinkle baking soda, let it sit for a while, then vacuum. Easy and cheap, and no toxic chemicals!

If you use any type of solution to get rid of smell or stains, be sure to follow up with diluted White Vinegar. Products like resolve and other spot cleaners leave a residue which just attracts more dirt. My SIL told me about that trick. Her father is a Pro carpet cleaner. In fact, using just baking soda on a dry carpet helps neutralize odor (let it sit overnight if you can, then vacuum up). Follow up using at least a 60/40 ratio of WV & water to help further rid area of odor. Plus, WV is just great to get carpets clean, all by itself. I sometimes have added just enough lemon juice to help cut the vinegar smell (although it's really not that bad). However the lemon smell can be more pleasant.

Good Luck!
