My son is 14 months and has severe cow's milk and egg allergies (and is mildly allergic to strawberries, peaches, blueberries and bananas). He loves all foods, but so many foods trigger his eczema and itching. Anyone have any info on ways to get fun people food to him?

What can I do next?

Are you familiar with the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Networkd website? There is also a related website....I forget the name of it....for parents of children with food allergies. It used to be called POFAK -- Parents of Food Allegic Kids. If you google POFAK you will find it, I believe. My son, who is now 7, had severe food allergies when he was younger and now has a very complicated allergic disorder so I know how hard it is to find safe foods!

Hi A.,
My 18 mo old son was also just diagnosed with a pretty severe egg allergy (to the point where we have to keep an epipen handy). He also has eczema. I feed my son noodles of all kinds (just inspect the box), yogurt, cooked veggies chunks and/or sticks, and crackers. He also likes chicken nuggets and cut up hamburgers (no cheese). Rice is also a great alternative as you can make so much with it. Just steer clear of baked goods (unless you make them yourself) and processed and prepared foods. I was pleasantly surprised that most products do not have egg in them anymore, but soy. These ingredients should be listed plainly on the back of the box which makes things a little easier.
My son is also allergic to any kind of fragrance. They did not test him for this, but whenever he is exposed to anything with fragrance (detergent, lotions, shampoos, etc) his eczema flares. I have found that the California Baby line of products are great for his sensitive skin and are all natural. You can get them at Target or order offline. They really help with his eczema.
Good luck!

Hey A., I have been doing GFCF for about eight weeks now. I have done a lot of research on the subject and it seems moms are the most limited by what to do. Just something you might try if you haven't and your baby can tolerate grapes is to freeze them and tell your child it is like a popsicle. Also, if your child tolerates orange juice -freeze some as well and then make it into a slushy just by stirring it up before it gets too hard. Yum! Good luck! If you have any other questions, please contact me at ____@____.com It was great talking to you. T.

There are plenty of food out there that he can eat, so that's good. Almost any kind of baked goods can be made with dairy and egg substitutes, or just without them. Goat's milk is highly nutritious and low-allergy. I make pancakes without eggs and cow's milk- those can be made into any shape. Chicken nuggets/fish sticks can be bought without dairy/eggs, but you have to check the labels carefully. I'd suggest trying your local Whole Foods or other natural food store/coop. Also, ethnic foods are great. Just spread some refried beans on a tortilla, or hummus on a pita. Oven fries are great and healthier when made with the skin- cut up potatoes, spray them with Pam or toss them with just a smidge of olive oil and bake. That works well with sweet potatoes, too. Obviously any vegetable is going to be healthy. Make them with a dip. Try The New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook or The Whole Soy Cookbook for recipes using soy instead of dairy. You can use ground flax seed and water for an egg substitute. Good luck!

Hang in there! We knew at 4 months my middle child had severe food allergies. Complete testing at 15 months revealed strong allergies to wheat, milk, eggs, beef, soy, rice and peanuts along with 27 other food intolerances. He is 6 now and has just outgrown most of those allergies. We learned to read food labels closely for words like casein, whey, anything starting with lacto-. Soy is a good alternative, the vanilla flavored soy milk is tastier. Wild Oats carries a variety of soy alternative. Tofutti brand items taste better, they have sliced cheeses, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. The Silk brand is tasty for milk and yogurt and Costco sells store brand soy milk made by Silk by the case in quart boxes that do not need refrigeration until opened. My 10 year old is also allergic to milk, so we have been at this for a long time. There is a company called EnerG that makes an egg replacer that is a powder that you mix with water that you can bake with, Kroger actually carries that. Hope that helps! A. B. PS my third child has no allergies at all!!

Rice milk can be substituted for dairy and it tastes really great. Try these things...peanut butter and celery, soy vanilla yogurt, organic carrots and ranch, make frozen apple juice pops. Hope this helps=)

I'm assuming your son can have soy milk, right?? It tastes good and comes in chocolate, too!! As for being allergic to THOSE fruits, he still has the pleasure to eat apples, oranges, pears, pineapple. Make him some smoothies!! Check your organic section of your grocery store!! They have lots of non-dairy and non-egg foods. My daughter loves when I cut up an apple in small pieces. Good luck...

Hi A.,
My son has allergies to eggs and nuts and we carry and epi-pen and benadryl at all times. He also has eczema which I found was triggered by citrus foods and tomato sauces. It is just a matter of figuring out which foods are triggers. Also, take a look at FAAN's website: http://www.foodallergy.org/ and NCFACES: http://www.orgsites.com/nc/ncfaces/index.html
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions -- I know what you are going through!! C.
