Child Bicycle Seats

Just wondering if anyone has one of the front (handlebar-area) mounted child seats like the Bobike Mini or the iBert Safe-T seat. I have a new rear-mounted seat ($30 Bell model from Sears) and although it seems safe, I'd prefer to be able to see my child at all times. Both the Bobike and the iBert get good reviews online- seems that these seats are common in Europe. We don't want a trailer, we'd prefer a bicycle-mounted seat. By the way, I have a standard Trek mountain bike- anyone have experience with mounting these type seats to a similar bike?

I have one called "wee ride". It goes on the front. I used it with my middle child when she was 1-3 years old, now I am using it with my 2 year old. I like it. on the back they can shift to look around you and make you unbalanced. I have not had that happen with mine on the front because they can see whats going on. Mine has a place that she can hold on, or lay her head down and take a nap.

I've always wanted to try one of these front mounted bike seats, but I haven't been able to find any locally sold to give it a whirl. I don't know any moms who actually have one either...

I've been researching these, and I'd like to try them first to see if these would be issues for me:

1) having to change the way I pedal - because you'd have to pedal with your knees turned out to avoid hitting the seat

2) mounting difficulties - since these don't fit all bikes

Hi. I do. Not sure of the brand. Bought it used. We like it and she does too. My husband mounted it on his bike and was afraid of scratching up his bike...so he put a thin towel under it and it is still secure.

About a month ago I purchased the weeride kangaroo seat (a front mounted seat and my son (16 months)loves it. He can see what is going on and I can see him. I feel like it is much better balancing than a rear mount. It was also very easy to install. Just connect a bar to your bike and then bolt the seat onto the bar. Good luck!

I have one and I LOVE it. I use it for my 13month old AND have even taken my 3 1/2 year old (who is tall for her age) for rides in it. Even with their helmets on I can easily see and the seat back is stiff so they don't lean back on you. We also have the rear mounted seat so I can honestly say that the front mounted is SO MUCH BETTER!! I can't remember which seat we have (the word kangaroo comes to mind) but it is dark blue and bright yellow. I got it from amazon.com

There are some pretty expensive seats this style (there was one in the onestepahead magazine for about $80), but I paid only $35 for mine.

I had the bobike mimi for my little girl. You need to be aware of the weight limits of the front mounted seats. If you plan to use it long term, you would want the bobike maxi plus. We loved the bobike mini. We bought an extra attachment so the seat easily went from my bike to my husband's bike for drop off and pick up from daycare. My daughter now rides on a rear mounted bike seat or in the trailer. I go tired of riding with my knees bowed out. I highly recommend the bobike! My husband and I both have cross bikes.

Good luck!

I've tried a front mounted and found it was very difficult to steer as all the weight is on the handlebar. Bumps, bounces and sudden swerves were nerve wracking. Every bump made me hang onto the handlebars tightly since all I could think was 'don't crash' since me crashing meant my daughter would go flying along with the bike. I also had to change the way I pedaled to accommodate the seat and child.

The rear-mounted seat was like having a counter balance weight on the back. I went one way and she went the other throwing me off completely.

The trailer was, and has been, my favorite option by far. The trailer is on an independent swivel so whatever both kids do back there doesn't affect me. Vice versa if I were to crash the kids are totally fine since they are not riding on my bike. Its also grown to allow for two kids and has been a blast with both of 'em.

I have a fully tricked out mountain bike since single track used to be a favorite pastime. Now I'm sharing the love of cycling with my kids and so far haven't managed to scare them too much.

On thing I heard from a mama that has one is that once your little one gets taller, it is very difficult to see over his head. Also, he would lean back onto her chest, making it hard for her to balance.
