4-6 months usually. If they are big spitters, sometimes docs tell you try
some cereal. It sometimes does help with the spitting up.

You can start from 4 months , I waited until 5 1/2 months with my kids. Dr's have advised to start it to help with spit up at a younger age , if your child is younger than 4 months then I would speak to the Dr first. Also I wouldn't add it to the bottle either , if your going to give cereal do it from a spoon.

You should only use cereal to assist with reflux under the direct supervision of your pediatrician. Baby needs to be properly evaluated and then the doc can advise you what baby needs and doesn't need. One of the reasons, other than proper diagnosis, is that you want to ensure that baby gets the proper nutrition. Baby needs a certain amount of breastmilk/formula and when cereal is added baby gets less of either.

It is recommended that parents wait until 6 months to introduce solids as baby has what is known as an "open gut". I never knew why it was always said to wait till 6 months then I read this article and it all made perfect sense:

I saw you posted earlier about spit up. Try feeding baby smaller amounts more often, keep him/her upright for at least 30 mins after feedings, try using a crib wedge -can be found at babies r us and it fits snugly under the sheet. And some babies are just spitters. My first was and I literally can't remember a time that my second spit up. Some baby's digestive system just takes time to be able to handle feedings.

Please don't give a baby cereal from a bottle, it's very dangerous. I almost died as an infant choking on cereal, from a bottle.

I would say the very earliest would be 5 months, with a spoon. No, it does not necessarily help with spit-up. I would wait until 6 months, for any food...personally.

Four to five months old, and it may or may not help with spitting up. My daughter spit up regularly until it gradually decreased and then stopped at about 9 months old.

giving a baby a small amount of rice cereal in their bottle can thicken it up and help a bit with spitting up, if it doesn't go through the nipple you can cut it with a sharp knife to widen the opening. it certainly won't hurt anything. then if the baby takes to it well try it a little thicker with a spoon. or if you prefer skip putting it in the bottle. but usually i think the age is 4-6 months.

With my first two I started about 4-5 months. With my second two I waited until they were 12 months old. Now with my fifth, I tried at 7 months and he hated it. I hope this helps.

The World Health Organization, American Association of Pediatrics, UNICEF and many more organizations recommend waiting until at least 6 mos to introduce solids because introducing them earlier increases the risk of allergies, asthma, obesity and type 1 diabetes. Some pediatricians will still tell you that you can introduce them as early as 4 mos (and some babies need cereal earlier for GERD), but they are going against the majority medical opinion if they do. 4 mos was the old recommendation, so they may just not be up-to-date.

There is no nutritional benefit from rice cereal ... so why would increase the risk of your child having health problems unless you needed to for a medical reason? Also, rice cereal is much harder for babies to digest than breastmilk and even formula, so it actually causes small perforations in their GI tract that make them more likely to get sick if they ingest germs.

Also, babies develop at different rates and are ready for solids at slightly different times. Here are the signs to watch for that indicate your child is ready: sits unassisted, doubled birth weight, lost tongue-trust reflex, opens mouth and leans forward for spoon. When the child has met all of these, he/she is ready for solids.

If your pediatricians has actually diagnosed your baby with GERD, they MAY suggest thickening the milk/formula with rice cereal. However, this should only be done under the supervision of a doctor! Putting rice cereal in a bottle is a choking hazard, so you shouldn't do it unless you need to (I say this as the mom of a reflux baby who, very reluctantly, has to put a small amount of rice cereal in my baby's bottle. :-/ ).

I started my daughter and son at 4 months. To be honest, I can't remember if it helped with spit up or not.
