My long haired cat has been barfing up fur balls... yes I know that is a lovely way of putting it. Does anyone know of a home remedy for treatment that would help her to pass them? Thanks!

We always use butter. It works and is in no way toxic or harsh on their system. Besides that, they actually like it. I suppose margarine works too. Good luck.

Rub a little butter on the back (or top of her foot) of her paw...a place she won't walk on it and not too much that she will shake it off. She will clean herself and that will help.

Rub Vaseline on her front paws. She will instinctively lick/wash it off. This will help them to slip through.

I hope it helps. :o)

Hmm, wish I had known about using butter earlier. That's alot cheaper. Anyways, we get our long-haired cat grooomed. She gets a "lion-cut" every 4 mths. And, she has stopped yakking since.

Yes! I found out years ago that cats will lick vaseline petroleum jelly off your finger and this will keep the hairballs passing through. Just a glob every few days seemed to work for my long haired cat just fine. A vet told me to do it when I was just out of college and it worked like a charm, was easy and inexpensive!
Hope it helps!

They have a tube of stuff that you can buy at the pet store, Wal-Mart, maybe even Tractor Supply. I used to have a long-haired cat and would just put a little on my finger and he would lap it up. He loved it. It's pretty cheap and you can do it a few times a week and it really helps with the fur balls.

Hi, I know that the vasoline/ petrolieum is tempting because its cheap BUT PLEASE DO NOT USE VASOLINE... the petrolieum is DEADLY and can cause organ failure. especially Kidney failure. The kidneys cant process that.

Just go buy some inexpensive hairball remedy its less than 10 dollars like 5 bucks for a large tube at Petsmart. also check Ebay sometimes you can find a great deal on that stuff. Brushing your cat daily also helps get rid of the hair that your cat swallows.

Good luck

we used cat laxative, which is just flavored vaseline. It works like a charm, you can buy it at Petsmart or even target for under $5. We also have our cats on Science Diet Hairball formula. It helps too.

Instead of Vasoline, I used peanut butter with my cat and she never had a problem with hair balls.

My mother gives her cats 1-2 tablespoons of pureed pumpkin each day...the cats love it and the hairballs have stopped.

Plain yogurt (or vanilla) works great, too. Cats usually love it since it's a milk product. Just a spoonful or two will do the trick!
