Hi Moms. I'm looking for a cash (first) car for my daughter. We'd prefer a smaller car in good condition. We're looking to pay cash. Thanks for any information.

What can I do next?

well, thanks to Cash for Clunkers - used cars aren't as cheap as they used to be!! That's why sooo many dealers are giving 125% of blue book value for trade ins.

Try craigslist - verify that you can take the car to your mechanic and have it looked over.

Try ebay - there are tons of used cars for sell on ebay.

Try CarMax....there are a lot of places to look. You can even try used car lots...

good luck!

I would only go through a dealer. If you buy private party and the car needs massive amounts of work the former owner doesn't have to tell you. If you buy an older car and it has low milage that could be a bad thing. I bought an older car once, looked great almost new, but ... all the seals had dried out and I needed to replace the entire coolant system and power steering system and a bunch of other things. Thank goodness I purchased the extended warrenty.
You can look at repair shops and tow yards. Sometimes towing companies will get a call to tow a car and it is abandoned after a certain number of days they can sell it.

autotrader.com .. when i got my car (not new used) we had gone up to the dealership and saw the price they had it listed for.. later that night i was browsing autotrader which i had been doing for weeks while we were looking at cars and they had it listed on there for 2000$ less than the dealership so i printed it out brought it up there and got the car for the better price.. from my experience u can find almost anything on that website

Well, you are buying for your daughter and I would stress the safest car you can afford.

Since you are buying a used car, you need to make certain this car has not been in an accident, flooded, poor upkeep, etc.

I would go to a reputable dealer who has used cars who can guide you or to a place like CarMax where you can get the details of the car you are purchasing.

Go cheap you get cheap and you don't want cheap when it comes to the safety of your daughter.

Good luck! We have a 17 yr old driver. It is nerve wracking.

Get a quote from your insurance if you have a couple to decide from. There could be a huge difference in premium and that might help you to decide. Ideally, get the VIN number so you get an accurate quote. Good luck.

cars.com. You can do your research and buy locally from either a dealer or individual. Great search site. You can even plug in the price you're willing to pay, lots of ways to narrow the search. Good luck!
