Cars II Movie

I want to take my kids to see Cars II. It will be their first theater experience. They loved the first Cars, but the previews for this second one make it seem a little too violent. My kids are 5 and 3 and the only movies they have ever seen are Cinderella, Cars, and Tinkerbell. Snow White, Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast were way too scary (due to scary looking people/creatures).

For those of you who have seen it, is there anything in the movie I should be concerned about? Is it scary, most importantly anything that looks frightening? Is it as violent as it looks in the previews?

Thanks for responding. I'm really looking forward to taking them to their first movie. OH, by the way, is 3 too young for a theater? He sits quietly through church.

What can I do next?

I literally just got home from watching it. I didnt think it was violent at all, i mean there was a bomb threat and crashing but it was cartoony.

My 3.5 year old grandson and some of his friends were treated to Cars 2 yesterday by their moms, and his mom said she wished she'd seen it first and then wouldn't have taken him. It was a lot more violent then the original Cars and the things they normally allow him to view. While not scared he's now acting out and repeating things he heard :-/ Very disappointing :(

'Cars 2' is a spy movie with McQueen and Mater.

We've been waiting for this movie for over a year and visually it's stunning. The ocean scenes on the oil rigs was amazing and I HATE that word.

I knew enough of the plot and watched every SINGLE clip Disney/Pixar released dozen of times and was still surprised.

The violence is 'cartoon violence' something the first Cars didn't have unless you count the crashes in the race.

My four year old son was so excited about seeing it and probably didn't blink once in the first 30 minutes. He was mesmerized.

I suggest waiting for the new 'Winnie the Pooh' movie. I comes out on July 15th. THAT would be a GREAT first movie!

I will tell you exactly what I told someone else who posted questions about Cars 2. I will wait until it comes to DVD and watch it myself first ...

You may want to read online reviews of the movie and watch before you take your kiddo or waste the money ... it's not so good.

"Your kids won’t mind any of these problems, but parents may be concerned by some of the messages the film has for them. Mater is dumber than ever, and his behavior throughout the film resembles that of a kid with ADD who’s just had too much sugar. That wouldn’t be a problem if the Cars 2 didn’t spend so much time going out of its way to laud that behavior. It’s easy to imagine parents going home after the film to discover their kid running around the house breaking things while shouting “I’m a tow truck!” Mater has morphed from being a loyal friend, into a self-centered, out of control buffoon. It’s fun, but as a role model for children, I can’t really think of anything worse." -- Josh Tyler Cinemablend.com

We go to this site for EVERY movie we are considering watching and they also have a feature to help you decide 3D or not ... hope this helps!

We went of Friday... I was disappointed. There was too much shooting... seriously, why??... and it was heavy with the "spy" thing. I think that went over my little guy's head, he just wanted the cars to race. He did lean over to me twice & say, "Mama, Cars II is a sad one."

However, when we left the theater, both kids said they really liked it. I think they like the experience of the theater.

Your kids might get antsy... with all the previews & the short feature before, but if your little guy can sit through church, he should be just fine!!

I just went & saw it with my four yr old daughter who calls herself lighting mcqueen. It was a very good movie & not violent ( a few cars get blown up). It was more about Mater though so if your kids aren't huge mater fans they may not enjoy it as much. Also it was in 3D & keeping the glasses on was definately an issue. I myself loved the movie but I think there is too much going on to see it in the theatre. I know my daughter will enjoy it more when it comes out on dvd. I hope this helps.

We just saw it this morning. I didn't think it was inappropriate for that age range, unless you are strongly against your kids seeing any cartoonish "shoot out" scenes. As far as the reviews trashing Mater's character, I think it's a little much & a little dramatic. I really don't kids are going to be damaged forever by a couple hours of a silly character. On the contrary, I thought it was a good lesson in being acceptable of all types of people & treating your friends kindly.

It wasn't nearly as fun or well done as the first movie, though. It centered around Tow Mater & Lightening McQueen didn't get too much screen time. The spy story line is a bit too much for younger kids, & it was very drawn out. It was almost 2 hours long, which is about 30 minutes too long for a kid's movie, IMO. I really wish I would've known & just waited for the DVD.

I would try another movie for a first movie, honestly. Also, 3 is an iffy age - church is way different than a movie theater, it's loud, dark, confined, etc. Even a mellow kid can get overwhelmed in a situation like that. But if you do go, wait a couple weeks & go early when no one else is there, just in case the 3 year old has a hard time with it.

Just talked to friends today who saw it yesterday. They said it was MUCH more violent than they were prepared for (and their kids have seen stuff I wouldn't deem acceptable for 4 year olds). They said that cars were being killed, tortured, etc. Overall, they weren't terribly thrilled with it and wished that it was more like the first.

For their first movie, I would go in a couple weeks when the hype of the movie has died down a little, so that fewer people are in the theater. That way, if your 3 yo DOES start walking up and down the stairs or won't sit down or starts fussing (like my son did at age 2 at his first Toy Story 3 experience), then you won't be disturbing anyone really. (When I took my son, I purposefully waited. There were only 4 other sets of people in the whole theater. I don't think they were bothered by him b/c we were the only ones on that side of the theater. My son liked the movie experience, but the previews were SO LONG that he got kind of bored and didn't want to stay seated by the time Buzz and Woody made it to the screen). I haven't been back since (he's now 3).

We went today. I was really disappointed. I think it is because I was so looking forward to this for my son who LOVED the first one (on video) and he is all about McQueen (his room's theme, bike theme etc). This was his very first time in a theatre so I thought it would be really special. McQueen was def. not the center of this movie like the first and the plot was more developed. The plot was probably a little over my 3 year old's head and he seemed bored during several parts. It was more violent than I expected but not actually scary. I would have liked it better if it was more like the first (in the same way Toy Story 2 compared to Toy Story 1). Hope you all like it better than we did. Perhaps if my expectations were not so high going in, I would be giving a better review now :-)

I just took my 5 and 3 year olds today. Of course, I couldn't tell you what the last 5 minutes of the movie is like since the projector broke right at the end, but we liked the rest of the movie (we got free passes to go back another time, but spent almost two hours there to miss the last 5 minutes....grrr!). I would try to go to a matinee (in the morning) since that will be mostly little kids (at least ours was). He may not sit through the whole thing (mine gets squirmy), but even if he's antsy, it's mostly kids anyway, so don't worry about it!

As for the violence....I didn't think it wasn't anything scary. There was some shooting and stuff, but since it's cars and not people, I didn't think it looked scary and my son wasn't upset by any of it (he's the 3 year old). Bottom line is that we enjoyed it. Anyone want to do a spoiler or send me a private message and tell me who won the Radiator Springs race? It cut off right when Mater told his girlfriend and Finn that he was turning down the new mission and staying home.

Have fun!

I started taking my kids to the movies when they were two....So, three in my opinion is fine.

Go during the day when it is likely to be more empty. Take lots of snacks:)

I heard it was VERY good. I have not seen much in the way of Previews for it. Those who have seen it, have loved it though.

3 is not too young for a well mannered kid. My 3 year old came with my daughter and I to see Tangled and liked it. But I wouldn't risk it unless you know it's good (I haven't seen it). I made that mistake for my daughter's first theater movie at 4-Toy Story 3 THE WORST MOVIE EVER. I was definitely very unimpressed with the awful bratty kids, the terrifying (to my 4 year old daughter who is pretty brave and sees mature shows often) villain and dumpster parts, the pandering to adult sensibilities with college kid leaving (this was for kids how??!!) My daughter cried various times throughout and wanted to leave. I kept staying thinking it would improve. It stunk. To this day she remembers that movie wasn't so good even though I tried to look on the bright side of it. Wait and make it a movie you KNOW is really great unless he's older and won't mind if it's scary.

Just got home from seeing Cars 2 with our 3 year old. It was her first movie theater experience. There is more violence in this one than the first, but all in all, it wasn't terrible. There is a scene with a "disguised" voice that my daughter didn't care for but again, it was a great experience for us.

I actually just walked back in the house from taking my son to see it. There was more violence than I expected. There were some explosions, you see a car get blown up (although it is in a reflection, so it isn't too clear), a couple of cars get tazed, Mater get gassed. My son did ok, but he usually doesn't get scared by that kind of stuff. Although I don't think 3 is too young, I'd probably not go see it in a theater if they have only seen those few movies. My son saw Toy Story 3 last year at 3 and I thought the trash furnace scene was scarier than Cars 2.
