Car Accident While 35 Weeks Pregnant

I'm so upset! I went to pick up a sandwich for lunch and some old BLIND woman rear-ended me. I was sitting behind a red light and BAM! I got out and she was like Oh, I'm sorry, I was just dabbing my eyes... but don't worry... your car is OK. I said, I don't care about the car (minor scratches... who cares!) as you can see I'm Pregnant! I care about my health and the baby! So I just took her Lic. plate # and phone # and left. As if that even matters. What am I gonna do with it?!!
Anyway... I'm doing okay... no spotting... no stomach pains... I'm just concerned that I'll start having more neck and back pains... I've heard it usually takes a day or two before one gets sore after an accident. This is all I need! As if I don't have enough aches and pains already!!!
So I'm looking for advice on what to do to avoid getting sore and having additional back and neck pains. I'm already starting to experience some neck and lower back pains and discomfort! =(
Thanks!

What can I do next?

S.,
CALL YOUR OB RIGHT NOW. And insist on an appt. Your OB will probably want to see you ASAP if not sooner. They take accidents seriously, especially auto accidents. Call your insurance company and give them the name and phone number of the gal that hit you. File a police report now.
There can be damage done internally that you don't feel now that could actually be harmful to your precious baby.
For future reference, stay at the scene of the accident, call the police to come to the scene, get all the insurance info of any parties involved in the accident and get the names of witnesses to the accident. This woman may have given you a false phone number and name. If this is the case you are stuck and it may come down to your word against hers as to who was at fault. A witness could have backed you up.
Hope all works out for you. Try not to be so worked up. This is not good for the baby either. (Blood pressure etc.)
Best wishes,
T.

I agree you should definitely go get checked out. Don't let feeling fine convince you that you and the baby are okay. Now scoot!!

Go to your doctor for a check-up. YES! Don't wait!

It's good you got the woman's license plate number and phone number... if in the future you need it. Luckily, no damage to your car.

In my state, we have a program whereby we can "turn in" dangerous drivers who are doing anything dangerous or did anything wrong on the road... we simply call the police department or go online, and we can "report" the person/the license plate number/ the incident etc., and a "letter/warning" is sent to the person.

Perhaps if anything, you can file a "complaint" about this woman... she was obviously not driving safely and perhaps is even too old to drive, or has poor eyesight etc. Her driving could be a "hazard" to other drivers or pedestrians too....

For you, try not to get too stressed... being you are pregnant. Yes i know it's hard... but try to not get to boiled up about it. Your discomfort now, could be due to the car accident or not.. .or due to your pregnancy... go to the doctor, and then you will have something "on record" and documented for yourself.

Take care now.. and rest....

S.,

I'm so sorry. I've been rear ended a couple of times and I know how it feels. One time, I didn't get any neck pain until the next day and then it lasted for months, that was back when I didn't know better and just took tylenol. Today, I would see a chiro ASAP. I'm sure your baby will be fine. I'm more worried about you, it can be painful enough on the body to be pregnant and then to get rear ended while in your car. I'd find a chiro if you don't have one already that has experience with pregnant Momma's and give him/her a visit.

For future reference, pregnant or not, minor damage to your car or not, always get the other drivers insurance information and drivers license number if you can, plus a lic. plate and phone number like you did. *What if* something went wrong, that is what insurance is for. Granted, you got enough info to began a police report if need be (I think). Again, I'm sure your baby is fine, I'm glad your car is OK, but take care of yourself ASAP.

Best wishes!
M.

Hi S., go get checked out, it is better to be safe than sorry, there is nothing you can do to prevent any neck and back injuries at this point, the good thing is it sounds like your stomach didn't hit the stirring wheel. Here's the bad part, you left the scene of an accident, so even if you have the license plate number and phone number, you really can't do much, may I ask why you didn't call the police? I pray all will be well with you and your baby, if it happened today, go get checked out today. Any neck and back pain will be worse in the morning after sleep on it,. I think I speak for allthe moms out here when I say we are here for you. J.

Ok, sorry to alarm you but, call your Ob/gyn right now and tell him/her what happened!!I had the same thing happen to me (about 1 month prior to due date). My doctor admitted me to the hospital immediately. I was fine!! Didn't understand any of it till they explained that the impact could have caused the placentia to dislodge. You would feel fine but they need to monitor the baby. To make sure everything is ok with the fetus and placentia. I was in the hospital almost 2 days before they would let me go home. Everything was fine but it could have been so much worse, according to the doctor. Please call just to make sure and if they tell you go to the hospital, go!! Please let us know how everything turns out.

The same thing happened to me when I was 34 weeks pregnant! I was on the freeway in traffic, stopped, when the person in the car behind the car behind me didn't stop. She bumped into the car behind me, who then bumped into me. Confused? =) Anyway, I didn't bump into anyone because a) I had enough space between myself and the car in front of me, and b) I was only lightly tapped.
Regardless, I was totally scared and upset. I called my OB right after and explained what happened. She told me as long as I had no bleeding and felt ok, that I shouldn't worry. She was right. However, I don't know how hard you were bumped. If it was a small tap, you should be fine. Definitely call your OB, though.

Sounds like you have gotten some really good advice so far!

For spinal recovery from both the accident and your pregnancy, you can get excellent information from a book called Maternal Fitness by Julie Tulper.

It will help prevent the jutting out chin, slumped shoulders, and swayed back that typically follows procrastinated post-partum recovery.
