Can Someone Else Homeschool My Child?

I am very interested in homeschooling. I would do it in a minute if I wasn't the sole income for my household. I don't want my 7 y.o. - 1st grade daughter in the public school system. My list of reasons is long and I have loads of family support in the idea of homeschooling.

I've been doing a little bit of 'scratch the surface' research and I've noticed that there are co-ops for subject swapping. Is is possible to have someone else home school my daughter? What is the likelihood in finding someone willing to do this for a monthly tuition? Where would I start to look for something like this? I am not looking for a tutor--obviously. That kind of fee structure would break me. I'm wondering if there is any possibility of finding someone local who home schools and wouldn't mind schooling my daughter too.

Thoughts?

What can I do next?

Hello L. M:

After reading your request, I searched at google and there are several mothers who homeschool and advertise at google to make the group bigger. It is an allowed activity by the district. You will find several phone numbers of different home schools. Phone a few and select and get information.

I hope this helps.

I am only contributing info on the cost factor because I don't know of anyone who has done this, but you mentioned the cost of just a tutor would be too high. I would suspect if you are having someone do a whole day of lesson planning, instruction, grading, etc. that the cost would be very expensive as well since you are hiring a teacher for the entire curriculum/day. Not trying to discourage you in your search, but just a thought.

There are tons of resources in your area. A friend of mine home schools her kids & they go somewhere called the "Green House" for other, bigger lessons. You might check into that. If you drop me a note, I can ask my friend about this for you as well. I'm fairly certain that the previous poster is right that it classifies as a private school in IL. If that doesn't work, we LOVE St. John's in Winfield, they're a really great Catholic school.

I would be interested in helping out because I homeschool my 8-year old but I think Elgin is too far away for you.

Last year we homeschooled and we both were working so it CAN be done! A first grader doesn't need much in the way of time spent on seatwork. And there are tons of co-ops that you could get the rest of the work in. In fact, we belong to a great group in St. Charles and we do tons of educational field trips!

The Illinois laws are pretty relaxed right now when it comes to homeschooling. This week we had an easy week because she was sick. We did lots of crafts and science experiments and believe it or not she wrote a song while resting in bed!

I could probably help you out in finding someone to help you since I know quite a few homeschooling families all over. Message me with your email!

I do think that home schooling may be considered a "private" school in the state of Illinois, in which case, yes, someone else can do the schooling for you. You'd have to check state law.
